Mr. Duan Shaoming was arrested and sent to a mental hospital in 2005. He had been held there since then. He died on August 4th, 2010.
Mr. Duan was arrested by personnel from the Political and Judiciary Committee in Dadukou District of Chongqing City in January 2001. He was sent to a brainwashing facility first. Later, he was sent to the psychiatric unit of Chongqing City Steel Plant Hospital. Then, he was released.
Mr. Duan called police officer Yan Xinliang and spoke with him about Falun Gong in December 2004. Yan Xinliang reported him to the police. Cai Zhiming, an officer from the Yuejin Village Police Station of Dadukou District, forcefully searched Duan Shaoming's body. The police officers ransacked Mr. Duan's home and confiscated Falun Gong books and materials. Mr. Duan was arrested afterward. Mr. Duan's son collaborated with the Dadukou District Police Department. Deceived by the propaganda against Falun Gong, the son had his own father admitted into the psychiatric unit of Chongqing City Steel Plant Hospital again in 2005.
Duan Shaoming was locked in a room with over ten mental patients. He had difficulty breathing due to the noxious, foul smell in the room. The doctors in the mental hospital prohibited him from leaving the ward under false charges that he was seriously ill. Some local practitioners tried to reason with Mr. Duan's son, but he refused to get his father out.
