Ms. Luo Yuhuan from Guangzhou City was sent to the Chatou Women's Forced Labour Camp in May 2008 and detained for one and a half years. The only reason for her detention was that she remained steadfast in her belief and spoke with people about Falun Gong and the persecution.
Ms. Luo benefited both physically and mentally from practising Falun Gong. She went to Beijing in June 2000 to speak for justice for Falun Gong. Beijing police arrested her and detained her in a basement for four days. She was then taken back to Guangzhou by a Dongshan District Police Station officer named Zhang Weiguo, Street Committee officer Huang Miaoyang, and Mingyue Neighbourhood Committee officer Zhou Xia. She was held in the Tianpingjia Detention Centre for 15 days, and was released only after her family was forced to pay more than 10,000 yuan1 in extortion to the police.
Fifteen days following her release, officers from the local authorities went to Ms. Luo's home and took her to a brainwashing facility, despite the fact that her four-year-old child was left alone at home with no one to care for him. Afterward, she was frequently harassed at her home, and harassing phone calls were made to her home, traumatising her husband and son and causing the family to live in constant fear. They were very frightened every time they heard someone knock on their door.
Ms. Luo was arrested in May 2008, as she spoke with people about Falun Gong. Security guards from the Yicui Garden Neighbourhood Committee in the Haizhu District, local 610 Office agents (an organisation of special agents just for persecuting Falun Gong), and officers from the Fenghuang Police Station ransacked her home and took her to the Haizhu District Detention Centre. Ms. Luo's family demanded her release and was told that she would be released after a 15-day detention. On the 15th day, however, the police took Ms. Luo to the Chatou Women's Forced Labour Camp to be held for one and a half years. In the camp, drug addicts are assigned to monitor Falun Gong practitioners and try to force them to renounce Falun Gong. Different methods were used to try to accomplish this: The practitioners were made to sit on small benches and watch videos slandering Falun Gong. They were forbidden to talk to others, and were forced to do hard labour for more than ten hours per day. They were frequently forced to work overtime. Ms. Luo was subjected to both physical torture and mental torment.
