Husband Sentenced to 10 Years of Imprisonment, Wife Arrested

Ms. Liao Yongge and Mr. Chen Yuhong, husband and wife, began to practise Falun Gong in 1998. Chinese Communist Party (CCP) officials had sentenced Mr. Chen to 10 years of imprisonment in 2000 and to date he has not been released. Agents from the 610 Office [an agency specifically created to persecute Falun Gong] arrested Ms. Liao when she was shopping for groceries on the morning of May 26th, 2010. The agents also ransacked her home. Ms. Liao was first held in a brainwashing centre, and within one month was transferred to the Xilin Detention Centre in Changzhou City and has been imprisoned there since.

Since the CCP started to persecute Falun Gong, officials from the Changzhou 610 Office and the Domestic Security Division often harassed Ms. Liao's family. The couple went to the Beijing Appeals Office in October 1999 to appeal for Falun Gong. A group of police agents approached them and beat them up, forcing them into a police van. The couple was brought back to Changezhou and were kept at the Xilin Detention Centre. Ms. Liao was held for one month, but her husband was not released until March 2000.

The couple went to Beijing again on June 29th, 2000 to appeal. Agents from the Changzhou Liaison Office in Beijing arrested them and held them in a hotel basement. That basement was only about 30 square metres, however, about 20 people were locked there. The couple was brought back to Changzhou and kept at the Xilin Detention Centre for about one month.

Not long after they returned home, Ms. Liao was arrested by 610 Office agents again and subjected to one and a half years of forced labour. She was sent to the Judong Labour Camp in Jiangsu Province and tortured there.

Then Mr. Chen was arrested by 610 Office agents in December 2000 and sentenced to 10 years of imprisonment. He has been kept at the Suzhou Prison since then. Their 10-year-old son had to stay at home alone. Later, he was taken care of by a friend of the couple.

Before the persecution, an incredible incident happened after Ms. Liao and her husband started to practise Falun Gong. During an accident, Mr. Chen's kneecap was broken and dislodged, rendering him disabled and in much pain. Chen chose not to have any medical treatment, and continued to practise Falun Gong. Within one month, he fully recovered.

Right now, Ms. Liao's husband is still imprisoned, and she is still detained by agents from the Changzhou 610 Office, Domestic Security Division, and the Lanling Police Station.
