Ms. Qiao Shuqin, 60, died on May 16th, 2010, after suffering 11 years of intense persecution by the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) for her belief in Falun Gong. Prior to her death, Ms. Qiao had been subjected to harassment, and multiple arrests and detentions. She was also forced to leave her home and go into hiding.
Ms. Qiao started practising Falun Gong in 1996, as a result of which the gynaecological disease she had suffered from disappeared without medical treatment. After witnessing how Falun Gong practice benefited their mother, her two daughters also started to practise Falun Gong.
Since the CCP started to persecute Falun Gong in 1999, Ms. Qiao and her two daughters risked their personal safety in order to tell people about Falun Gong, sharing their own miraculous experiences with them.
In November 2002, Ms. Qiao Shuqin went to Beijing with several fellow practitioners to post flyers around Tiananmen Square. After they returned to the Jilin Province, they managed to pass new articles by Falun Gong's founder to fellow practitioners who were unlawfully incarcerated in a brainwashing centre.
In September 2004, Ms. Qiao was arrested while talking to people about Falun Gong. She was then imprisoned in the Huadian City Detention Centre.
In November 2008, Ms. Qiao was arrested again while trying to secure the release of fellow practitioners incarcerated in the Jiutai Forced Labour Camp. She was then detained in the Wutai Forced Labour Camp for five days.
Ms. Qiao's two daughters have also suffered persecution at the hands of the CCP. Her oldest daughter was detained in a forced labour camp for three years for practising Falun Gong, and her youngest daughter was sentenced to five years in prison for practising Falun Gong and is currently incarcerated in Jilin Women's Prison.
The long-lasting persecution took a severe physical and psychological toll on Ms. Qiao. She passed away on May 16th, 2010.
