Tan Jinhui, a Falun Gong practitioner, has been detained and sent to forced labour camps and brainwashing facilities many times in the past ten years. In January 2010, after being persecuted continuously, she felt ill and too weak to even spit water out of her mouth, possibly due to poisoning.

On September 14th, 2006, Ms. Tan Jinhui was arrested by Jiao Zongjun and Li Wei from Xinhua Police Station, and Yang Bing and Hou Jinming from the Domestic Security Bureau in the Guanghan Police Department. They twisted her hands backward, and injured her left hand in the process. Ms. Tan was sent to the Guanghan Detention Centre.
On June 25th, 2007, Ms. Tan was sentenced to three years of imprisonment by Guanghan Court, and taken to the women's prison in Yangma Town, Jianyang. While in prison, she was sent to the Fifth Ward and interrogated by a female police officer named Deng. Ms. Tan quoted the law which protects her freedom of belief. As a result, officials sent her to the Ninth Ward for brainwashing. She could not be brainwashed and was sent to the First Ward in January 2008, where she was handcuffed and hung up. While she was hung up, the handcuffs cut off the blood circulation in her hands and wrists. After an hour of this torture, she could not endure the pain and was released.
In August 2008, Ms. Tan felt weak all over her body and wanted to take a nap. However, she was forcibly sent to the prison hospital by two criminal inmates who were designated by guards. She underwent a series of tests, including a cardiograph. As she was about to faint, she was given an injection.
On September 13th, 2009, Ms. Tan was taken back home by the Xiaohan Town 610 Office (an organisation of special agents just for persecuting Falun Gong). One day in January 2010, she felt very uncomfortable and weak all over. Later on, these symptoms worsened. Now, she finds it difficult just to turn over in bed. Her only son helps her to wash her hands and feet and put on clothes. Her gums often bleed, and her mouth and face are swollen. She breaks into a sweat after finishing a meal. She is afraid of cold and hot weather, and does not even have the strength to spit.
Ms. Tan was persecuted by the Chinese Communist Party several times prior to her arrest. In October 2000, Ms. Tan went to distribute materials about Falun Gong, and was arrested by officers from Xinhua Police Station in Guanghan. Officer Jang Tianxing broke a metal ruler while beating Ms. Tan with it. Ms. Tan was then sent to a detention centre, where she was detained for 27 days.
On October 13th, 2001, Ms. Tan was arrested at her residence by officers from Xinhua Police Station, with no reason given. She was then sentenced to a year and a half at Nanmusi Women's Forced Labour Camp in Zizhong. In the Seventh Ward, guard Zhang Xiaofang beat her and sometimes designated criminals to beat her in a small room. These criminals dragged her by the hair and slammed her head against a wall in order to get preferential treatment in the prison. The abuse made Ms. Tan feel dizzy. She was also forced to stand for a long time because she would not renounce Falun Gong. From 5:00 a.m. to 2:00 a.m. the next day, she had to stand the whole time, even while eating. She fainted, fell, and hit her head on the cement floor three times over that period. The guards then designated two collaborators1 to help her stand up and have her stand continuously. Sometimes she could not stand after getting up, as her legs were numb. The guards would not allow her to sit, and had the others hold her up. Ms. Tan was forced to stand like this for nearly two months. On April 12th, 2003, her term was over, but the guards extended it by another 87 days due to her refusal to give up Falun Gong. She was released on June 30th, 2003.
In March 2004, policemen Li Wei, Jiao Zongjun, Chen Shaoyong, and others from Xinhua Police Station ransacked Ms. Tan's home. They found 30 banners and other materials about Falun Gong. The policemen tried to find and arrest her, and monitored her home for seven days. They also searched her mother's home in An County, and the homes of her other relatives. Ms. Tan thus could not go back home, and became homeless for about half a year.
In August 2005, Ms. Tan was arrested and sent to the Hexing Brainwashing Centre in Deyang. She was persecuted there for a month.
