Engineer Imprisoned at Forced Labour Camp

Practitioner Ms. Xia Deyun was an engineer at the Institute of Geology, Shengli Oil Field. She had poor health due to a head injury, which resulted in three major surgeries. Then she started practising Falun Gong and regained her health. After the persecution of Falun Gong began in 1999, she was laid off because of her spiritual belief.

Ms. Xia and another practitioner, Ms. Su Huizhen, were arrested by Xindian Police in Dongying District when they were distributing Falun Gong materials in Dongying on October 25th, 2010. Their homes were then ransacked and they were detained for 15 days at Liuhu Detention Centre in Dongying District. The two practitioners protested the detention with a hunger strike, but they were brutally force-fed by the police. Ms. Xia's health was in critical condition due to torture.

Ms. Xia was sentenced to two years of imprisonment by Dongying police on November 9th. Then she was sent to the No. 2 Women's Labour Camp in Wangcun, Shandong. The camp first refused to accept Ms. Xia because of her poor health, but they finally agreed to admit her.

This was not the first time that Ms. Xia was arrested and sent to a forced labour camp. On January 28th, 2004, she was arrested when she and another practitioner, Shi Ning, went to visit practitioner Wang Shaohua, who had been persecuted at the brainwashing centre run by Shengli Oil Field. Collaborating with Binbei Police, the brainwashing centre workers sent Ms. Xia to a different brainwashing centre. Ms. Xia went on a hunger strike to protest the persecution, but was brutally force-fed by Wang Zhiqiang and other workers at the centre. On the ninth day of Ms. Xia's hunger strike, Party Secretary of the Institute of Geology Wang Yuqian, Director of the 610 Office [an agency specifically created to persecute Falun Gong] in Shengli Oil Field Xu Tonghai, and head of the brainwashing centre Wang Zhiqiang tried to transfer Ms. Xia to the forced labour camp in Wangcun. The camp refused to accept Ms. Xia at that time because her health was so poor.

Ms. Xia has now been imprisoned at the Wangcun Women's Forced Labour Camp for over 50 days. He father came to the camp from his home, which is more than a thousand miles away, and requested to meet with his daughter. The camp refused his request, and they did not allow the father to leave clothes for Ms. Xia. The family's other requests for visitation have been rejected, as well.
