Minzu University Instructor Tortured to the Verge of Death

Ms. Liang Bo, an instructor at Minzu University, was arrested by the Haidian District Police of Beijing in May 2010. She was beaten and tortured in police custody, which caused her thoracic cartilage to bleed and fracture. She was comatose multiple times and was temporarily unable to walk. Ms. Liang reportedly now weighs only 30 kilograms and her blood pressure has dropped to 40/60. She has a fever every day. She also has high blood viscosity, which causes a high risk of stroke.

Ms. Liang Bo is currently detained at the Beijing Second Detention Centre. Below is her recent situation.

1. As she goes on hunger strikes, she frequently falls unconscious. Police bring audio equipment into her cell and attempt to falsify audio recordings demonstrating that Ms. Liang is refusing medical treatment.

2. Due to her hunger strike, she suffers an electrolyte imbalance. The detention authorities frequently draw blood for diagnosis but never carry out any necessary medical treatment.

3. She has the mumps and a very low blood count. However, no timely treatment is being carried out.

Ms. Liang has been left unattended for days. Detention authorities are causing intentional damage to her health and then claiming that she refused medical attention.

According to Meng Chunshuo, Ms. Liang's husband, and the Beijing First Intermediate Court decided to hold a second trial for her in mid-December of 2010. The court did not go through the open trial procedure before they upheld the previous sentence of three and a half years in prison. Ms. Liang went on a two week hunger strike to protest. As her health deteriorated, the prison authorities would not take her, and thus she stayed at the detention centre. She once told her attorney that the police tortured her in the detention centre and that her health was in very bad shape.

Her attorney had to negotiate with the authorities last month before being allowed to see her. Her health was extremely worrying. She could not walk on her own, and had a constant fever.
