- Falun Dafa practitioners illegally detained in the labour camp have been appealing according to the law. However, the personnel at the Hewan Labour Camp ignored their appeals and instead escalated the persecution. The practitioners' basic human rights have been severely violated. The camp tried to isolate those practitioners who persisted in making appeals and practicing Falun Dafa into separate teams, in order to further persecute them. Visits by their families or talking between two practitioners were not permitted. In the First Squad, the food was insufficient and of poor nutritional quality. For breakfast we would have one piece of steamed dough and so-called "soup" made up of boiled leftovers from the night before containing only a few grains of rice in it. Lunch and supper were boiled rotten vegetables leaves without any meat, while the camp menus falsely listed some fancy entrees. (It was said that even the inspecting officials knew that the camp was cheating on prisoners' meals.)
- The police broke the eyeglasses worn by the practitioners who held firm with Falun Gong. In the Second Squad, guard Gao Junan smashed practitioner Lu Hongsheng's glasses. At the direction of guards Fu Zhengrong, Yu Changqing, and Lin Zhenglong, criminal inmates in the First Squad smashed eyeglasses of practitioners Han Kai, Chen Chuangqian, and Tian Hongchou. When these practitioners tried to reason with the police and clarify the truth to them, the police denied what they did.
- The first, sixth, and eighth squads of the camp are illegally detaining many Dafa practitioners. These squads are also the brainwashing centres set up by the "610 Office". Many firm practitioners have been suffering physical and mental torture there.
- In November 2001, practitioner Han Benzhou unintentionally sat on the ground and was pulled away to a bedroom by criminal inmates at the command of guards Yu Changqing and Lin Zhenglong. Behind a closed door, they beat and kicked Han. They even hit him with a stool, inflicting bruises and causing swelling to his head and face, and causing pain all over his body. They continued the torture by cuffing his hands behind his back and using wide tape to tape his mouth to prevent him from shouting.
Under promise of reward, the camp guards used scoundrel means to persecute Dafa practitioners without hesitation. In order to receive financial rewards, the guards conduct criminal activities that harm the general public. The police from the First Squad collaborated with some illegal merchants to process pornographic cartoons and books, to produce tainted food seasonings, and process and package pirated reference books for students. In January 2002, officials from the Culture Department seized a batch of the pirated copies of the student reference books, worth more than 10,000 Yuan [Chinese currency, the monthly salary for an average Chinese urban worker is about 500 Yuan]. However, the case was not pursued since the authorities were covering for each other. Many police also extorted money from inmates and the practitioners.
Nevertheless, the Ministry of Justice of China honoured such a scoundrel camp as a "Modern Civilized Labour Camp." Jiang's regime's acclaim of the so-called "civilized execution of the law" is merely a lie to fool the people.
