The Court of Qingshanhu District in Nanchang City tried three Falun Gong practitioners, Mr. Liu Yong, Ms. Liao Xiaolin, and Ms. Wan Jinlian, at around 9:30 a.m. on April 25th, 2011. No advance notice of the trial date or location was issued, and the defendants' families were not notified in time. Four court police officers and several other officials escorted the defendants to the courtroom. In court, Lai Hongyu, the associate court director, announced that Mr. Liu would be sentenced to seven years in prison, Ms. Liao, who is handicapped, to one and a half years in prison, and Ms. Wan to one year in prison. The entire proceeding lasted less than ten minutes.
The Court of Qingshanhu District had also held a trial to charge Mr. Liu and other practitioners on November 30th, 2010, however, no sentences were announced at that time.
Persecution of Mr. Liu
Mr. Liu supports his whole family financially, including his wife, their young child, and his 88 year-old mother-in-law. After he started practising Falun Gong, his physical and mental condition greatly improved, and his arthritis and other long-term diseases disappeared. He also quit smoking, which he had been addicted to for many years, and became a helpful and caring person.
Mr. Liu lived in the Taohua Subdivision of the Qingshanhu District. After 10:00 p.m. on June 9th, 2010, Taohua Subdivision's Neighbourhood Committee Director Zeng Ping, Taoyuan Police Substation's officer Xiong Liqing, six other officers, and a locksmith arrived at his home in two squad cars. Without following any legal procedure, they broke the lock and entered his apartment. Four officers guarded the entrance, while two others arrested Mr. Liu. They also ransacked his home, and confiscated a computer, two printers, a CD-writer, a DVD player, CDs, and Falun Gong materials exposing the persecution of Falun Gong.
Mr. Liu's grandmother, his 60-year-old mother, and his wife went to the Taoyuan Police Substation to inquire about his whereabouts. The police told them to inquire with the Public Security Bureau of Qingshanhu District. Mr. Liu's family then went to the Public Security Bureau, but police agents there said that Mr. Liu was arrested by the National Security Team and that they didn't know where he was. They provided a phone number for the National Security Team, but the telephone was not answered.
It was later learned that Mr. Liu was detained in the First Detention Centre of Nanchang City and that he had been cruelly tortured and interrogated.
Persecution of Ms. Chen
After Mr. Liu was arrested, Ms. Chen Dongmei, another Falun Gong practitioner from Nanchang City, visited his grandmother. Someone at the apartment complex videotaped her helping the elderly lady down a flight of stairs to the first floor. She was subsequently arrested at home by the National Security Team of Qingshanhu District, on the afternoon of July 1st, 2010. On July 30th, 2010, she was sentenced to two years of forced labour. Since Ms. Chen showed symptoms of pneumonia at the time, the labour camp refused to take her. However, the police repeatedly pressured the labour camp officials to admit her.
Persecution of Ms. Liao and Ms. Wan
Officials from the Qingshanhu Police Substation entered Ms. Liao's computer repair store, videotaped the surroundings and confiscated her computer on May 16th, 2010. They arrested Ms. Liao, who is in her thirties, while her mother and five year-old son watched in fear and cried.
Ms. Wan Jinlian was arrested on May 29th, 2010.
