Mr. Zhang Fengqian, a professor at the Department of Philosophy, Zhongshan University, has been held in the Sanshui Brainwashing Centre for a year. Guangdong Province 610 Office (an organisation of special agents just for persecuting Falun Gong) intervened to direct the persecution due to Mr. Zhang's influence in the academic community. Mr. Zhang is currently unable to think coherently as a result of mistreatment.

Mr. Zhang is renowned in the field of ancient Chinese philosophy. He is also a researcher at the Institute of Chinese Philosophy, Zhongshan University, and a professor of Hong Kong Taoist Institute. He has published several books and many articles over the years.

Mr. Zhang started practising Falun Gong in early 2010. Authorities arrested him as he spoke with people about Falun Gong and took him to a brainwashing facility in May 2010. Mr. Zhang had been on a hunger strike to protest the persecution. The local 610 Office and personnel from the brainwashing centre used all kinds of methods attempting to transform [forcibly renounce Falun Gong] him. Mr. Zhang refused to give in, and the latest rounds of abuse have severely hindered his mental faculties.
