On July 24th, the authorities at the Wanzhou District Brainwashing Centre in Chongqing began force-feeding Ms. Zhou Kailan, who had been on a hunger strike for four days in protest of being detained and persecuted.
A dozen officials held her down, some holding her feet and legs, some restraining her hands and arms, and several retraining her head. They then inserted a tube, more than a metre long, down one of her nostrils and into her throat. The violent insertion caused excruciating pain, and Ms. Zhou repeatedly screamed in desperation. After a while, white foam gushed out of her mouth. A doctor wiped it off with a towel, and they continued to force-feed her. Soon after, Ms. Zhou stopped moving. The doctor said, “She is dehydrated.” They then hastily pulled the tube out and sent her for emergency treatment.
After over 24 hours of emergency medical intervention, she was still in critical condition. The doctors then stopped treating her. Realising that she might die shortly, the brainwashing centre authorities secretly sent her home on July 30th.
Since July 20th, 1999, Ms. Zhou has been arrested six times for her belief in Truthfulness-Compassion-Forbearance. During two of the six times, she was taken to a brainwashing centre. Another time, she was sentenced to one year of forced labour.
In June 2000, she was arrested for distributing Falun Gong materials and handcuffed to a staircase banister at the Longbao Police Station overnight. While handcuffed, the police beat her multiple times, and she was not able to walk without assistance for a period of time. In November 2000, she was arrested again, detained and tortured for more than twenty days for her involvement in making and distributing Falun Gong leaflets exposing the persecution.
In 2001, a group of police officers planted false evidence in Ms. Zhou's room. They made phony Falun Gong materials, place them in the room and photographed it as evidence. They took her to the fourteenth floor of the local police department. One of the high-ranking offers of the police division threatened her and shouted, “Push her off the fourteenth floor.” Another officer kicked her with hard, leather boots. After she fell to the ground, he pulled her up and kicked her again. The kicking continued for two hours, and then and another officer came in carrying a new pair of boots. The policeman kicking her told Ms. Zhou, “We will use that new pair after this pair is worn out.” Next, he pushed Ms. Zhou to the corner, walked to the other side of the room, ran toward her and kicked her abdomen as if he was kicking a soccer ball for a goal. He continued kicking Ms. Zhou until she passed out from the pain and injuries.
In 2006, Ms. Zhou was sentenced to one year of forced labour for persisting in her practice of Falun Gong.
On the morning of July 25th, she was walking in the street, and suddenly a dozen officials arrested her and took her to the sixth floor of Bayi Hotel. The Fourth Military Reserve Artillery Regiment in the Zhoujiaba area of Wanzhou District uses the space for the Wanzhou Brainwashing Centre.
Ms. Zhou resisted the detention and protested from the first day in the brainwashing centre by going on a hunger strike. She is still suffering the pain and injury from the violent force-feeding.
