Falun Gong practitioners Mr. Liu Shaozai, Ms. Mai Weilian, Ms. Pan Guihui, and Ms. Hong Meifang from Dianbai County in Maoming, Guangdong Province, were arrested and taken to Hexi Brainwashing Centre. Xiao Xiong, head of the 610 Office (an organisation of special agents just for persecuting Falun Gong) in Dianbai County; Lin Zhiwei, deputy head of the police department; and other police officers carried out the arrests on the evening of August 6th. Their family members immediately asked the brainwashing centre to release them.
In the brainwashing centre, cold water was poured over the practitioners if they were seen doing the exercises. Mr. Liu began to have blood in his stool and developed symptoms of hepatitis. His weight dropped from 165 to 110 pounds.
Ms. Mai began to have severe stomachache. She couldn't eat and vomited frequently.
Mr. Liu's family called Xiao Xiong of the 610 Office around 5 p.m. in the afternoon on September 14th. They told Xiao about Mr. Liu's condition and asked him to release him. Xiao hung up the phone.
