Falun Gong practitioner Ms. Du Wenhui from Lanzhou, Gangsu Province, has suffered repeated arrests, detention, and brainwashing since 1999. She was released in September 2010 after two and half years of detention in the Gongjiawan Brainwashing Centre and returned home.
Gongjiawan Brainwashing Centre
Ms. Du, 46, lives in the Wuxingping area of the Qilihe District in Lanzhou City. She opened a small floral shop in 2006 with loans from relatives. On March 24th, 2008, Xiyuan Police Station deputy head Wei Dong and eight officers arrested her at her shop.
After confiscating her mobile phone and obtaining all her contact information, police took Ms. Du to the Gongjiawan Brainwashing Centre.
Officers Yang Wentai and Yang Dongchen took her her to the brainwashing centre, where she remained for two and a half years. They took all her money.
Her captors assigned others to closely follow her 24 hours a day, including when she went to the toilet. Physical abuse was commonplace. They forced practitioners to perform military marching exercises. Anyone who refused to cooperate was subjected to physical assault and insults.
In the afternoon on March 20th, 2009, a brainwashing centre official yelled at Ms. Du to “stand up!” Ms. Du refused. Officer Qi Ruijun repeatedly kicked her, and she began a hunger strike the next day. The following day, Qi Ruijun brought in doctor Wang Yuquan and nurses Ma Xin, Yang Qinglian, and Li Caixi. They force-fed her through a nasal tube.
Six days later they took Ms. Du to the office. Qi Ruijun and guard Qiao Houquan grabbed her and punched her in the neck. They ordered nurse Yang Qinglian to continue force-feeding, which lasted nine days.
On April 29th, 2009, Qi Ruijun told officer Liu Xin and a couple of others to carry Ms. Du to another room. They chained her hands behind the headboard of a bed, tied her hair to the headboard, and slapped her face repeatedly for three hours.
On October 28th, 2009, officers Yang Dongchen and Qiao Houquan prevented her from using the toilet. She went on to another hunger strike to protest, but was again tortured with force-feeding.
In November 2009 the brainwashing centre installed surveillance cameras in the hallways. They also began to force practitioners to watch videos defaming Falun Gong every day. Centre head Yan Yongsheng recruited collaborator1 Zhang Jinglan to assist in the brainwashing activity. They began the intensive brainwashing on Ms. Du that lasted 24 hours. After that, they held her in solitary confinement for two months.
In September 2010, Yan Yongsheng assigned new collaborators to monitor practitioners and forbade them from talking to one another.
At the end of September, practitioners began another persecution protest hunger strike. On the sixth day of the strike, Yan Yongsheng brought in doctor Wang Yuquan and nurse Ma Xin and had them force-feed practitioners. After Ms. Du had not eaten for 13 days, the brainwashing centre officials got worried and released her.
Benefits from Practising Falun Gong
Prior to beginning Falun Gong practice in 1997, Ms. Du was allergic to flu medicine. Whenever she took it, a big lump appeared on her chest. The condition was so stubborn that even doctors had no cure. Her mother recommended Falun Gong and bought her a copy of the Falun Gong book, Zhuan Falun and several other Falun Gong books. After reading the books, she realised they were telling the truth and answered all her questions. She was extremely happy and began to practise Falun Gong.
Soon, all her physical symptoms, including her allergy, were cured. Her temperament also changed. She no longer felt jealous of others. She did not feel compelled to get ahead in pursuit of personal gain.
Detention and Brainwashing
On July 20th, 1999, the communist regime began to persecute Falun Gong. In December 2000 Ms. Du was on her way to Beijing to appeal for Falun Gong. Police stopped her at the Lanzhou Train Station and detained her overnight at the Xiaxiyuan Police Station in the Qilihe District. The next day she was transferred to Qilihe Police Department for one day, then transferred to the Yanjiaping Detention Centre for 15 days.
A few days after her release, Ms. Du was arrested again. Officers Yang Hongbing and Ma Shenggang from the Xiyuan Police Station tricked her into going to the police station. The following day she was taken to a brainwashing operation in the Hanjiahe Rehab facility, where she was detained for six months. After a hunger strike by practitioners, the police made the practitioners’ families pay 1,200 yuan2 per person and released them.
