Mr. Shao Yanbo was a student in the Physical Education Department at Northwest Normal University. He went to Beijing to appeal for justice for Falun Gong in 1999 and was detained for two weeks by officers from the Anning Police Department. School authorities forced him to suspend his studies. Gansu Province State Security Department agents arrested him on December 7th, 2003, and handed him an eight-year imprisonment. Mr. Shao's term expired on December 7th, 2011. 610 Office agents (an organisation of special agents just for persecuting Falun Gong) unsuccessfully attempted to take him directly from the prison to a brainwashing facility to continue persecuting him.
On the day Mr. Shao was released, several practitioners went to prison to pick him up. They waited outside the entrance to the prison gate from 7:00 till 9:00 a.m. when prison guards told them that their superior had instructed local 610 Office agents to come and pick him up at 3:00 p.m.
Mr. Shao refused to go with the agents, and the other practitioners also refused to let them take him away, but the prison officials refused to release him. Furthermore, they colluded with more than 20 officers from the provincial political and judiciary committee, 610 Office, and police department to threaten and videotape the practitioners and investigate their identities.
The practitioners had one thought: “No one has the right to take Mr. Shao away. Moreover, he has already been persecuted for eight years, so he has the right to return home.”
Mr. Shao walked out of the prison gates at 8:00 p.m. Local 610 Office agents wanted to take him home in their car, but his firmly refused to comply. After a standoff that lasted more than two hours, around 10:00 p.m., Mr. Shao was able to get into the practitioners' car and left the prison.
The authorities tracked the practitioners.
Practitioner Ms. Wang had come from out of town and was on a business trip in Gansu Province. The authorities followed her to her hotel, and at 11:00 p.m. the night, they demanded that she tell them who organized the practitioners to pick Mr. Shao up, where she was from, and who her employer was. Ms. Wang refused to reply and sternly told them that they were violating the law by following and tracking citizens. The officials left emptyhanded.
The authorities also monitored and followed several other practitioners, including Mr. Jin Yijun, an attorney. They arrested Mr. Jin because they thought he was the organizer.
