Practitioners in Shuangcheng City Facing Forced Labour

On November 13th, 2011, several dozen Falun Gong practitioners in Shuangcheng City, Heilongjiang Province, were arrested by the Shuangcheng City National Security Team and the Harbin City Police Bureau. They were detained at the Shuangcheng City Detention Centre and the Harbin City Second Detention Centre.

All of the detained practitioners were sentenced to two years of forced labour on November 23rd. They have refused to accept the sentences. Numerous practitioners' families are demanding that the Shuangcheng City Detention Centre, Harbin City Detention Centre, and the Harbin City Police Bureau immediately release the practitioners.

When the families were bringing clothes and daily necessities to the practitioners on November 21st-22nd, they were informed that the practitioners were holding a hunger strike to protest the detention and mistreatment, and that the guards at the detention centre had already started force-feeding them.

Ms. Fan Shude from Shuangcheng City was one of the practitioners detained in the Harbin City Detention Centre. Her health deteriorated rapidly due to torture and mistreatment. She had to be taken to a hospital for emergency treatment. She was then transferred to a mental hospital.

On November 22nd, about two dozen family members of the detained practitioners stood in front of the Shuangcheng City Detention Centre and the Police Bureau, asking that the police release their family members. They were told that they were not allowed to see their families.

On November 23rd, all the detained practitioners were notified that they had been sentenced to two years of forced labour. All of the practitioners refused to sign the sentence notifications.

The Harbin City Police Bureau and the Shuangcheng City Law Enforcement Division couldn't agree on the two-year sentence and so decided to hold a meeting on November 24th.

The families continued demanding the immediate release of their family members, and for the authorities to stop their illegal, criminal, and inhuman treatment of the practitioners.
