Ms. Chen Shuqin Tortured to Death in Changchun Women's Prison in 2011

Falun Gong practitioner Ms. Chen Shuqin began practising Falun Gong in 1996. She benefited physically and mentally and many of her illnesses disappeared. During the past 12 years of the Chinese Communist Party's (CCP) suppression of Falun Gong, Ms. Chen was arrested eight times for her faith. She served a one-year term in a forced labour camp, and was then sentenced to five years in prison. She died in Changchun Women's Prison in February 2011.

In 2010, Ms. Chen was arrested for the eighth time and held at the Jilin City Detention Centre. She became emaciated, and her back was hunched over to a 90 degree angle as a result of torture. She was released due to her critical condition. Several days later, officers from the Lianhua Police Station in Changyi District arrested her while she was still recovering. She was taken to the Changchun Women's Prison.

Since Ms. Chen refused to “transform” [forcibly renounce Falun Gong], she was tortured and locked in solitary confinement in the Fourth Ward of the “Education Prison District,” which is the most abusive ward in the prison. Guard Guo Xia, chief of the prison district, instigated the inmates to torture Ms. Chen. They shoved her head into a water bucket to choke her with water and then pulled her out. They repeated this many times and Ms. Chen almost choked to death.

Unable to bear the torture, Ms. Chen gave in and agreed to give up Falun Gong. When she became clear-minded, she wrote a statement that she would practise Falun Gong steadfastly, and was subsequently tortured again. Ms. Chen started a hunger strike to protest the mistreatment. She was subjected to even more brutal persecution and torture. She was bound to a “stretching torture device” and was stretched for long periods of time. It was the most brutal torture and she was on the brink of death. Guard Guo Xia ordered the inmates to force her into writing the “five statements” to renounce practising Falun Gong.. When Ms. Chen became clear-minded, she declared the statements she wrote to be null and void. She was beaten, tied up with ropes, and stretched while being hung up. Ms. Chen refused to renounce Falun Gong and was beaten to death.

In an attempt to cover up the truth, the prison personnel inserted IV needles into her body after she died and sent the body to the hospital. They claimed that Ms. Chen died suddenly from a heart attack.
