The Jilin City Police Department launched a mass arrest of Falun Gong practitioners on the night of May 29th, 2012. Police ransacked practitioners' homes and seized their money and other items. Officers from the Gaoxin District Police Station went to practitioner Mr. Li Wenjun's home, and arrested Mr. Li as well as practitioner Mr. Yu Xuezhong, who happened to be visiting Mr. Li. Mr. Yu was beaten for not disclosing his name. He died the next day, May 30th, at the age of 53.

A Good Person and a Dedicated Worker

Mr. Yu was over 5 feet 11 inches tall and was in good health. He started practising Falun Gong before 1999. Before practising, he suffered many health problems, including loose teeth. After commencing the practice, his gums became firm, all of his illnesses disappeared, and he was full of energy.

Mr. Yu was simple, kind, and honest. He was meticulous at work. Due to the Chinese regime's persecution of Falun Gong practitioners, he lost his previous insurance company job. He had been working as an advertisement courier for Darenfa Supermarket for more than 4 years before his death. He was divorced and lived with his daughter, who is working for a foreign company.

Delivering advertisements is a hard job. A courier has to meet a certain quota of high buildings every day. Mr. Yu was dedicated. He never skipped a delivery even though he had to work until midnight. He put the advertisements back in the right position if they were about to fall. A coworker said, “Let it be.” He said, “God is watching.”

Repeatedly Persecuted

Mr. Yu had been repeatedly arrested and subjected to forced labour for his belief during 13 years of persecution. He was imprisoned with Mr. Li Wenjun at the Yinmahe Forced Labour Camp in Jiutai City, and endured various forms of torture.

In June 2004, Mr. Yu was reported for explaining the facts about Falun Gong and was arrested by officers from the Tianbei Police Station in Jiaohe City. On June 6th, he was taken to the Bajiazi Detention Centre, where he was beaten and injured by inmates. On July 9th, he was taken to the Jiutai Forced Labour Camp and subjected to a year of forced labour. Guards limited his toilet use and locked him in a small cell. The labour camp profited from his family visits. To visit him, his family spent 1,200 yuan¹ in a month. Most of the money was spent on meal charges.

On March 16th, 2007, Mr. Yu was reported for explaining the facts about Falun Gong at the Jilin Electric Power University. He was arrested by officers from the Changchun Road Police Station and agents from the security division of the University. He was taken first to the Changchun Road Police Station, then to a detention centre, where he kept clarifying the facts to people around him. He was then taken to a forced labour camp 11 days later, where he was rejected and then released.

One day in 2011, Mr. Yu was beaten unconscious while he was explaining the facts of Falun Gong in the Yongqiang Community. The abusers took away his bicycle while he was unconscious. His head was swollen; he was severely hurt and had to take sick leave for many days.

Persecuted to Death

The Chinese Communist Party (CCP) Jilin Province Committee, and the Political and Legal Affairs Committee (PLAC) ordered the arrest of practitioners in the name of security for the 18th National Congress of the CCP. From 6:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. on May 29th, Jilin Police raided practitioners' homes, arrested practitioners, and seized their money and property. Within the Jilin City area alone, more than 20 practitioners were arrested, and their homes ransacked.

Mr. Yu was visiting Mr. Li Wenjun when officers from the Gaoxin Police Station came to arrest Mr. Li. Although the officers did not know his identity, he was arrested. The police beat him because he refused to disclose his name. He was last seen requesting to use the toilet and was denied by police. Thereafter, he was not found at any detention centre or brainwashing centre. People later learned that Mr. Yu was persecuted to death by police.

The Police Station Attempts to Cover it Up

Officers from the Gaoxin Police Station showed Mr. Li's family Mr. Yu's picture and questioned them about Mr. Yu's name and other information. They obtained Mr. Yu's name and workplace. They called the manager supervising the delivery of advertisements in Darenfa Supermarket to the police station and detained him for several days. They questioned him about Mr. Yu's situation and his Falun Gong practice. They wanted the manager to say that Mr. Yu had psychosis. They wanted to shift their responsibility in Mr. Yu's death. Mr. Yu was a very good person and very dedicated to his job. His manager admired his character. Despite being threatened by the police, he stuck to his conscience. He refused to say that Mr. Yu had psychosis, and stated that Mr. Yu was a good person and a good worker.

After their failed attempts, they spread rumours that Mr. Yu had helped an old lady rent a house to print Falun Gong materials. It was a lie. Insiders say that Mr. Yu knew nothing about it. The police are trying to trick Mr. Yu's family into accepting a settlement so they can cover up their crime.

After Mr. Yu died, Director Zhang of the 610 Office (an organisation of special agents just for persecuting Falun Gong) in Jilin City showed Mr. Yu's photo to others and claimed that he died from a heart attack. Bai Yan and Director Zhang of the 610 Office in Jilin City are the main culprits responsible for the May 29th mass arrest.

Mr. Yu was persecuted to death for his belief by the police from the Gaoxin District. We are calling for the truth and justice.
