At the moment, 6.5 million people in Hong Kong are being threatened with the loss of their basic right of expression, belief and association by article 23, a proposed law in Hong Kong. Swedish Falun Gong practitioners appealed to the public to support an international petition against this threat to the human rights of Hong Kong citizens.

"We really believe that in Hong Kong the society in general is progressing towards an undermining of the individual’s freedom and human rights, and at the same time the “one country, two systems” promise will be broken. This breech of agreement is facing extensive opposition. On October 2, Time Magazine reported that the Tung administration in Hong Kong is allowing Beijing to make the final decisions in Hong Kong and that this is a mockery of the independence that was defined 5 years ago. Alan Leong, chairman of the Lawyers Association described the effects of Article 23 on the legal system as “cooking a frog in cold water” from the viewpoint that the proposed law shall, in a treacherous way, lead to the death of legal system without the people understanding it before it is too late. The Hong Kong newspaper Apple Daily voiced that the implementation of Article 23 was actually like a “drink with a slow effect poison” that slowly corrodes all aspects concerning citizen’s freedom and rights. On the 19 of December, the EU-parliament adopted a resolution that challenges Hong Kong not to implement the proposed law according to Article 23 because it is in violation of basic human rights. This specifically referred to peaceful protests such as the one we have here today, which would be defined as a crime in Hong Kong."
On those freezing cold days before Christmas, minus 8 degrees, even the ink in pens were frozen, but many kind-hearted people did not hesitate to lend a helping hand to their fellow human beings on the other side of the earth. Perhaps their signatures were the best Christmas presents the Hong Kong people could get.
