Dafa practitioner Ms. Su Juzhen, in her 40s, lived in Huludao City, Liaoning Province. She owned a beauty salon. Ms. Su had previously suffered from severe heart disease, stomach disease, tapeworm infection, pancreatic infection, and her legs were often swollen. In 1996, Su Juzhen began practising Dafa, and soon all of her illnesses disappeared and her skin became smooth and glowing.
Before the persecution began, Su Juzhen was well known for her selflessness and kindness. She lived a frugal life but she never hesitated to use her money to help others. Ms. Su donated free services to poor people who went to her salon and she even gave them money. Sometimes psychiatric patients went to her salon, and she helped them to get washed, combed their hair and changed their clothes for them. She was awarded with the distinction "Outstanding Self-employed Businessperson" several times. Additionally, Ms. Su often provided financial assistance to poor students. The principal of Qiansuo No 3 High School once personally delivered a silk banner in appreciation of her selfless deeds. Su Juzhen often visited elderly people in nursing homes bringing them daily necessities and food. She also donated money to fix the Xihe Bridge. Her family was awarded as one of the "Ten Outstanding Families in Huludao City." A local TV station requested an interview, but she politely declined, saying, "I did all these because I practise Falun Gong" [Note: Falun Gong practitioners conduct all their actions without conditions and neither do they seek fame or reward for their efforts.]
However, such a kindhearted person who always took other people's interests to heart has now been tortured to the point of suffering a mental breakdown as a result of the persecution of Falun Gong by Jiang's group. She was targeted for persecuted because she refused to give up her belief in the principles of "Truth-Compassion-Forbearance."
In August 1999, Su Juzhen went to Beijing to appeal and was arrested and sent to the Suizhong Detention Centre. The police confiscated 2,000 Yuan cash from her.
On October 31, 1999, Su Juzhen was seized by authorities and sent to the Masanjia Labour Camp and transferred to various labour camps.
During the 2002 Chinese New Year, Su Juzhen's family received a notice from the labour camp requesting them to pay 1,500 Yuan to cover "medical expenses" before they could take her home. The true reason the perpetrators wanted to release Su Juzhen was because she was mentally traumatized at the time from savage torture. She was helped out of the labour camp by four or five people. Her limbs were slack; her eyes unfocused and non-blinking and she had a blank expression on her face. She could not eat until 22 days after she returned home. Her family later discovered unhealed wounds around her genitals and there were needle punctures on her body.
Su Juzhen is still not able to speak or think normally. Her husband, who is also physically weak, sits home with her all day. Both of them require care from others. Her younger daughter is below working age and the whole extended family relies on income from a small shop owned by her elder daughter. Su Juzhen's father lost the sight in both eyes due to extreme grief over her condition and her mother passes each day in a depressed state of mind.
Even under such miserable circumstances, corrupt government officials and police officers from Suizhong still harassed Su Juzhen's family. In October 2002, the police forcibly dragged Su Juzhen's elder daughter from her bed, and her family cried while Su Juzhen stood watching but showing no response or any expression on her face. It was a very tragic scene.
