On May 3rd, 2001, Falun Gong practitioners Chen Rei (pseudonym) and Zhang Ming (pseudonym) were arrested while taking a bus in Jiayuguan City, Gansu Province. They were sent to a detention centre, where the guards there tortured them. When Chen Rei went on a hunger strike to protest his arrest, the guards beat him even more. Guards later tied him to a wooden structure in the shape of a cross for several days. His family was not allowed to visit until he had been nearly tortured to death. The police also searched Zhang Ming's home, seizing Falun Gong materials and books.
