Ms. Hu Qinglan, in her fifties, was retired. She had worked for a construction machinery plant in Lanzhou City. She went to Beijing to appeal for Falun Gong at the beginning of July 2000 and was arrested at Tiananmen Square. She was detained in Beijing for almost twenty days. During that time, policemen stripped off her clothes and forced her to sit on a bench for a long time. The food given to her was spoiled and rotten. She suffered a lot both physically and mentally. Later, the local government arrested her again and sent her to the Lanzhou Detention Centre, where she was detained for fifteen days. During that time, the guards didn't allow her to drink water, even though she was forced to do hard labour under the scorching summer sun with the temperature as high as 36-40 degrees Celsius (97-104 degrees Fahrenheit).
When she was finally released in the middle of August 2000, she was extremely weak. She was hospitalized in March 2001 and died at the end of April 2001.
