Falun Gong practitioner Du Weifeng from Lingyuan City, Liaoning Province, suffered brutal persecution when detained in the Chaoyang Forced Labour Camp, which led to a mental collapse from which he has still not recovered. The police department turned things around and said, "Practising Falun Gong [Falun Dafa] made him have these mental problems." After a careful and all-encompassing investigation, we are publishing our report on this case.
Du Weifeng started practising Falun Gong in 1994. After Jiang Zemin's regime started the persecution of Falun Gong in 1999, practitioners have been suffering savage persecution and injustice. On June 29, 2003, police officers arrested Du Weifeng when he was on his way to post a letter of appeal. Du Weifeng was sentenced to three years of forced labour and detained at Chaoyang Forced Labour Camp where he suffered brutal tortures such as electric shock, standing straight for long periods of time and many other abuses.
Once, when Du Weifeng and other practitioners were forced to work outdoors, labour camp guards suddenly targeted Du Weifeng and frenziedly lashed his thin body with tree branches. Even passers-by were shocked to see this, and several came up to stop them. "How can you beat a teenager like this? He is just a teenager!" Finally the guards had to stop.
Du Weifeng was forced to do heavy manual labour on a daily basis, to submit to brainwashing and to write a "guarantee letter." Each day, threats and punishments hung over him. He suffered such severe physical and mental torment for such a long time that he eventually became quite depressed. Seeing his problem worsening and wanting to avoid responsibility, the labour camp sent young Mr. Du back home.
Less than a year after Du Weifeng returned home, the police saw that his condition had improved, so they abducted him again and sent him back to the forced labour camp to continue "reforming" him, which again put him under severe mental pressure.
On February 23, 2004, led by the camp's deputy, the labour camp started another round of "brainwashing" of practitioners. Du Weifeng was regarded as a key figure. Qi Yongshun, head of the No.4 Division, ordered the team head Tian Shushan to torture Du with electric shocks in order to "reform" him. Tian Shushan held Du Weifeng in a classroom one afternoon and tortured him with electric batons off and on for over four hours. Then Tian ordered Du to stand straight until midnight. Then Tian came back to drag Du to the classroom and started another round of electric shocks. Du's cries of misery woke up people who had been sound asleep, and everyone condemned Tian's cruelty.
During breakfast the next morning, Du Weifeng, the young man just over 20 years old, cried and couldn't eat anything. Tian Shushan forced Du to stand up. Facing the many people gathered in the cafeteria, he pointed at Du and verbally abused him. After suffering another day's forced brainwashing, on February 25th Du Weifeng started to protest during breakfast. He was then put in a solitary compartment. There he was handcuffed, forced to wear a heavy helmet and tied to the floor. He was held there for as long as one month.
Du Weifeng had reached his limit with such physical and mental torment and finally collapsed. He showed symptoms of a mental disorder, which was even worse than his first breakdown. The labour camp quickly sent him back home to avoid taking responsibility for his condition.
For several years, more hundreds of practitioners have suffered brutal torture at the Chaoyang Forced Labour Camp. The labour camp has used all kinds of inhuman tortures on those who persist in their belief.
