Ms. Zhao Fengyun died around 10:00 p.m. on February 27, 2004, while working in Workshop One of Division Twelve in the Wanjia Forced Labour Camp of Harbin City, Heilongjiang Province.
The schedule for the Wanjia Forced Labour camp was as follows: morning drill [like training soldiers in marching] at 6:10 a.m., working in the workshop at 6:30 a.m., breakfast for the Female Division at 7:00 a.m., lunch at 12:00 p.m., supper at 4:00 p.m., then continue working until 10:00 p.m. The hours were often extended to 11:00 p.m. or 12:00 a.m. Each team was allowed 10 minutes, starting from the moment they sat down at the table, to finish eating the meal. Those who ate slowly, had no teeth or had a problem with their teeth could not finish eating, and therefore they did not get enough food. The food served was pressed, steamed cornbread, which at times had coal cinders, sand and dirt in it. During the whole day each person was allowed to use the toilet only during the four scheduled times, and each toilet use could not exceed two minutes. At Wanjia Forced Labour Camp the police considered the scheduled drill time, mealtime and toilet time as break time; the rest of the time from 6:30 a.m. through 10:00 p.m., practitioners had to work in the workshop. During these long (generally 15 to 16) hours, no one was allowed to move to another seat, speak or take a break. Anyone who did so was rebuked, mocked, sworn at or beaten.
Practitioners were illegally detained for long terms in such a horrific environment. The work was stressful, burdensome, and lasted for long, excessive, hours. Moreover, practitioners suffered from serious malnutrition and from toxic nose and throat-irritating odours from the bookbinding glue. On top of all of that the camp police tortured practitioners at will. Therefore, each practitioner's health and life were constantly in danger. Some practitioners wore a gauze mask, and some covered their noses and mouths with a scarf, but none of these attempts at protection worked. Some practitioners developed headaches, some developed pain throughout the whole body, and some felt sick and vomited. The police wore large gauze masks and watched from outside of the workshop with the door wide open. In February there was much ice and snow in Harbin. With the door wide open, the workshop was extremely cold. Around 10:00 p.m. on February 27, 2004, in Workshop One of Division Twelve in Wanjia Forced Labour Camp, people were tensely binding books. That's when the tragic death took place as follows.
Around 10:00 p.m. on February 27, 2004, Falun Dafa practitioner Ms. Zhao Fengyun suddenly started vomiting violently and her work fell out of her hands. The practitioners sitting across from her called the guard immediately and told him that Ms. Zhao had been feeling sick the whole afternoon. Another practitioner went over to take care of Ms. Zhao. When she saw Ms. Zhao was about to vomit again she brought a basin for her to wash her face and hands. After vomiting Ms. Zhao wanted to use the toilet, but the police guard didn't allow her to, so Ms. Zhao had to lie prone on the table to ease the discomfort. Practitioner Qing Lian helped support her. After a while Qing Lian asked Ms. Zhao if she still wanted to use the toilet. Ms. Zhao did not respond. Very soon Ms. Zhao breathed heavily in gulps with fixed eyes, and then her lips turned white. All the other practitioners came over to see her, but policeman Zhang Nianrong yelled at them and ordered them to return to their seats.
The police did not bring her any cardiac pills until more than twenty minutes later. By then she could no longer open her mouth. A practitioner used force and opened a gap between her teeth, but the practitioner discovered that her tongue had turned white, and her body had started to become cold. Ms. Zhao took two big breaths in gulps, and started sliding downhill. Soon, she had no response whatsoever.
This is the way it was. The Wanjia Forced Labour Camp police enslaved Falun Dafa practitioner Ms. Zhao Fengyun, worked her to death and ignored her deteriorating condition when she needed immediate medical attention. The air in the entire room seemed as if it had congealed, the strong odour of the glue and other foul odours were simply suffocating. Moreover, it was quiet like death. The doctor on-duty, Sun Shujun, and policeman Chang Fan, didn't arrive until half an hour later. They checked Ms. Zhao's pupils, casually performed artificial respiration, and punched her chest in the area of her heart; they got no response. They simply confirmed that she had died. However, to cover-up their crime, the police lied to the practitioners, saying that they were going to send Ms. Zhao Fengyun to the hospital in the city. They ordered practitioners to stop work for the day, leaving only Ms. Zhao's body in the workshop. Upon returning to the cell everyone's mood was heavy, and everyone was worried about Ms. Zhao.
Ms. Zhao Fengyun was 50 years old. She previously was an employee of a factory in Harbin City. She had heart disease and many other diseases before practising cultivation. Since practising Falun Gong all her illnesses disappeared. Because she told people the truth and appealed for Falun Gong, she was arrested and sentenced to three years of forced labour. She was tortured in the Wanjia Forced Labour Camp for a year and a half and not allowed to practise Falun Gong. To make money, the authorities in the Camp enslaved practitioners with work, overtime and burdensome and highly intense labour. The camp personnel harmed lives for the sake of making money.
Practitioners in Ms. Zhao Fengyun's (Third) Squad sat on their beds and could not fall asleep that night; they could not forget what had just happened. They all wept with broken hearts. At this time, policewoman Qiu Yang called Qing Lian, the practitioner who had tried to help Ms. Zhao, to the water room and punched and beat her. Practitioner Qing Lian, with kindness in her heart, asked the policewoman why she was beating her. Policewoman Qiu Yang said, "It is because you took care of Zhao Fengyun when she was dying, and it is because you cried for her after she died." This is the real and true image of police in China's Wanjia Labour Camp and the so-called law-enforcement personnel under Jiang Zemin's political regime.
The Dafa practitioners did not give in when threatened. The next day all the practitioners went on strike and started a hunger strike. During the morning drill, they all shouted, "Falun Dafa is Good!" The police were stunned. Practitioners demanded the truth about Ms. Zhao's death: that it was due to persecution. The police had no other choice but to admit the truth, that Ms. Zhao Fengyun died in the workshop. They promised that in the future they would stop work for the day at 9:00 p.m.
We appeal to all good and just countries and their people to help stop the regime's persecution against Falun Gong practitioners, to stop the evil doings in Wanjia Labour Camp, to immediately release all Falun Dafa practitioners being illegally detained and to punish all wicked people, so as to restore justice and fairness to the world.
