When Falun Gong practitioner Ms. Zhu Guilin's mother and other relatives went to Baimalong Women's Forced Labour Camp in Hunan Province on the morning of April 12th, 2007, to request the release of Ms. Zhu, who was being detained beyond her forced labour term, they were arrested by police from the Shifeng District Police Branch in Zhuzhou City, Hunan Province.

Ms. Zhu Guilin, 43, is from Shiman County, Changzhou City, Hunan Province. She has been detained in Baimalong Forced Labour Camp since 2004--over two and a half years--and has suffered brutal torture. She has now served her so-called "forced labour term" but the labour camp still refuses to release her.

For practising Falun Gong and informing people about the true nature of Falun Gong, Ms. Zhu has been arrested and detained many times. Once an official even sent her to the mental section of Shiman County Hospital where she was injured by being injected with unknown drugs.

When her release date had come and gone, her mother and other family members went to the labour camp on the morning of April 12th, 2007, to request her release. They have not been not heard from since. Later the news came that they had been arrested by police from the Shifeng District Police Branch in Zhuzhou City. On April 13th, her mother was released. Her brother and sister-in-law are still being detained. On April 12th, three practitioners--Guan Yonger, Liu Xueqin, and Xiao Wang--were arrested as well. They are now detained in the No. 2 Detention Centre of Zhuzhou City.

Visiting a family member in detention is allowed by law. However, Baimalong Forced Labour Camp authorities have openly mistreated Zhu Guilin's family members. Moreover they colluded with the Shifeng District 610 Office and the Shifeng District Police Branch to arrest and persecute these innocent citizens.

On April 9th, 2001, Ms. Zhu's family visited her in the labour camp. Her four relatives were going to take her home since her forced labour term was over on April 8th. On that day they were not only not allowed to take her home but they were also treated badly by the guards.

In the visiting room, they saw Ms. Zhu walk out unsteadily with the help of others. She was skeleton thin and very weak. They couldn't help but cry. Especially, her mother, who was 73 years old, cried out involuntarily in anguish. A guard came and tried to stop her from crying. Later four or five other guards rushed in and one of them shouted at Zhu's mother, "Stop crying!" Seeing the old lady holding her daughter's hand and refusing to release it, several guards forcefully dragged her away. Ms. Zhu's sister-in-law, who was worried about her mother-in-law's heart problem, came up and tried to stop them. The guards then turned on her. Some pulled her hair, others held her arms, and some pinched her neck. She was dragged from the visiting room on the second floor all the way down to the first floor. The buttons on her clothes were even pulled off. Then two guards threw her on the ground outside the labour camp gate. She landed on her head and her back and a big bump developed on the back of her head. She was covered with dirt. The motorcycle drivers at the gate who were waiting for customers saw the scene. They all denounced the guards, "You cannot do this." Then guards went back in and dragged Ms. Zhu's mother out. They twisted her fingers and pulled the over-70-year-old lady along the ground. They didn't stop until the elderly lady fainted.

This experience on April 9th greatly shocked and angered Zhu Guilin's family and gave them cause to be more worried about her safety.

For what crime were Ms. Zhu's family members arrested? It seems that their arrests were related to what happened on April 9th, because they said that they would report what happened on April 9th to higher authorities above the labour camp. That would be a real threat to the guards, who always tried to deceive their superiors and delude their subordinates. To cover their savagery to Zhu's family members on April 9th, guards in the labour camp colluded with the "610 Office"1 and the district police to arrest them.

Addendum: Partial list of facts regarding Zhu Guilin's treatment in Baimalong Forced Labour Camp

Ms. Zhu Gulin was arrested on October 8th, 2004, and sentenced to two and a half years forced labour. She was sent to Baimalong Forced Labour Camp. The following are just part of what she was subjected to in the camp. Since the labour camp tried hard to cover up her story, further investigation is needed in order to get more details.

1. Sleep deprivation

She was deprived of sleep for three consecutive days. She was not even allowed to doze.

2. Forced to stand for a long time

She was often made to stand straight without any movement for a long time--one whole day or several hours.

3. Beaten by inmates

The guards assigned some inmates, usually drug offenders, to watch Falun Gong practitioners day and night. These prisoners often beat Zhu Guilin. In July 2005, because she didn't stand up to do the morning calisthenics, the prisoners dragged her out and beat and verbally abused her, right in front of the guards. Another time she was beaten until she lost consciousness. She was sent to the No. 2 People's Hospital. Once when she got up a little earlier in the morning because she couldn't sleep any more and sat on a stool to rest, five or six drug offenders came and beat her. On April 9th, when her family visited her, they saw that she was covered with wounds everywhere, on her face, her head, elbows, knees, legs, and so on. There were three burns on her hands. Several places on her body had festered.

4. Brutal force-feeding

She went on a hunger strike to protest the persecution. She was force-fed several times. It is now known that practitioner Zuo Shicun died from force-feeding. From January to March 2007, Ms. Zhu was detained in the Strict Control Division. She started a hunger strike. During this period, she was force-fed and given infusions (IV). She was so weak and thin that it was hard to find the blood vessels in her arm for the IV. Even though she was in such bad condition, the guards still instigated the prisoners to slap her face.

5. Financial persecution

Using the cost of the infusion as an excuse, the forced labour camp seized 600 yuan2 from the money that Zhu Guilin's family members paid for her living expenses.
