It is impossible to arrive at an accurate count for how many Falun Gong practitioners have ever been imprisoned at the Tumuji Forced Labour Camp, all in complete violation of the Chinese constitution. Nine women are still confined there today.
The camp employs a system to abuse and exploit the practitioners. Officials first subject practitioners to a physical examination and only accept those who can perform hard labour, never mind if he or she is ill. The second step is to send the practitioners to a brainwashing centre. Each practitioner is put in a room where a group of guards take turns brainwashing them. They compel the practitioners to view brainwashing videos. Some practitioners had to endure more than a month of this brainwashing, making them foggy-headed and resulting in a weak main consciousness. They were then ordered to write the so-called three statements1. If the person refuses to "reform2," torture begins, such as beatings, kicking, or shocks with electric batons.
Practitioner Ms. Baosiqin Gaowa was imprisoned there two times and was put in the brainwashing centre three times. The first time she was brainwashed for more than 40 days. A man named Guan beat her so severely that she became injured. A one-inch long scar below her mouth is still visible today. The second time she was put in the brainwashing centre again for more than 40 days. The third time she was in for over three days. She was forbidden to sleep for two whole days and was forced to stand. Her feet swelled.
Guard Yin Guiyuan beat practitioner Ms. Ma Xiuping mercilessly. Guard Na Renhua beat practitioner Shi Junlan mercilessly. The reason for the gross abuse? Neither practitioner wanted to eat lunch. The guards said the two were trying to effect a hunger strike, so they pulled the two upstairs to give them a beating.
Elderly practitioner Ms. Wan Xiuying developed high blood pressure from the gross mistreatment and lost control of her right leg, but the officials didn't free her. The guards frequently cursed people. Many times their wrong behaviour was stopped by practitioners' good intentions. Sometimes when a practitioner's family member arrived to visit, the officials would find some excuse to prevent a meeting with their loved ones.
Criminal prisoners at Tumuji Forced Labour Camp make up only one per cent of the inmates. The majority of those incarcerated are people that believe in a religion or people who went to appeal to the higher authorities.
Note
1. "Three Statements": Practitioners are coerced under brainwashing and torture to write "Repentance Statement," "Guarantee Statement" or 'Dissociation Statement" as proof that they have given up their belief. In the statement, the practitioner is forced to admit remorse for practising Falun Gong, promise to give up Falun Gong, and never again associate with other practitioners or go to Beijing to appeal for Falun Gong.
2. "Reform or Transform" Implementation of brainwashing and torture in order to force a practitioner to renounce Falun Gong. (Variations: "reform", "transform", "reformed", "reforming", "transformed", "transforming", and "transformation")
