Ms. Zhang Shengrong has been missing since early May 2009. A month and a half has passed and there is still no word of her whereabouts. Ms. Zhang, who is over 70 years old, was persecuted severely by the Jinyang Comprehensive Administration Office in Chengdu City, Sichuan Province, after she hired a lawyer. Reports say that Ms. Zhang was taken to a brainwashing centre by the Jinyang Comprehensive Administration Office, but there were no specific details. Because she has been missing for so long, her son, Tao Yuan, who was detained in Guangyuan Prison and tortured so badly that his spine was dislocated, has had no one to look after him. It is not known what his situation is.
Ms. Zhang Shengrong and her son Tao Yuan are both Falun Gong practitioners. They were both severely persecuted after July 20th, 1999. Ms. Zhang has been detained multiple times, and from December 26th, 2001 to March 21st, 2005, a period of three years and three months, she was detained in Jinhua Brainwashing Centre in the Wuhou District by the Jinyang Comprehensive Administration Office
After her release from the brainwashing centre, Ms. Zhang continued to be monitored and harassed by staff from the Jinyang Comprehensive Administration Office. Her son, a graduate student at Beijing Normal University's Ming Dynasty History Department, has experienced even more detainments and was taken to a labour camp at least twice. Mr. Tao Yuan was subjected to unimaginable torture.
In the ten years since July 20th, 1999, Mr. Tao has had less than one year of freedom. In January 2007, he was arrested once again in public by officers from the Jinyang Polce Station. He was later secretly sentenced and remains in Guangyuan Prison to this day.
On March 27th, 2009, Ms. Zhang received a call from Guangyuan Prison, stating that Mr. Tao's spine was dislocated and he required surgery. Ms. Zhang hired a well-known human rights lawyer, Mr. Cheng Hai, to prepare documents requesting her son's release on bail for medical treatment. When Mr. Cheng and Ms. Zhang were meeting, the Jinyang Comprehensive Administration Office staff monitoring Ms. Zhang ambushed them and beat and injured the lawyer. At the same time, Mr. Cheng assisted Ms. Zhang in filing a lawsuit to the local Procuratorate, suing the Jinyang Street Administration Office for their constant monitoring activities.
However, the Jinyang Street Administration Office intensified their monitoring of Ms. Zhang. Since early May 2009, people have been unable to contact her. According to informants, she was arrested again by the Jinyang Street Administration Office and taken to a brainwashing centre.
