Falun Gong practitioners from Kunshan City, Jiangsu Province, Ms. Yao Rongzhen, her blind son Wang Chao and daughter-in-law Xie Hongmei were severely persecuted by the local 610 Office1, a gestapo-like agency set up specifically to carry out the persecution of Falun Gong.
At 2:30 p.m. on July 3rd, 2001, Shen Ping, an official from the 610 Office in Kunshan City, Zhu Xueming, a policeman from the Chengzhong Police Station in Kunshan City, and over 10 other policemen broke into the Sunshine Blind People Massage Centre. They and four to five others broke into the staff rest room on the first floor and forcibly arrested blind staff member and Falun Gong practitioner Wang Chao.
For the next four hours police followed every staff member in the massage centre, even into the toilet. Police also intimidated and threatened the owner of the massage centre.
At 3 p.m. that day, Sheng Ping, Zhu Xueming, two ladies from the Tinglin Community Committee in Kunshan City and two other people, broke into Wang Chao's home in Tinglin New Village, Kunshan City, and the home of Wang Chao's mother Yao Rongzhen who lived at Room 403 of the same building, and searched their homes. The neighbour Yuan Suzhen, a Chinese Communist Party (CCP) group leader in the community committee, directed the police where to look. Police confiscated Falun Gong books and forcibly took away 58-year-old Yao Rongzhen.
In the evening, several policemen from the Chengzhong Police Station broke into Yao Rongzhen's home again and lied to her husband. Police asked him to bring his daughter-in-law, practitioner Xie Hongmei to the police station, but he refused. Police threatened him saying that if they didn't go they would arrest them. They took away Xie Hongmei and her 12-year-old son Wang Zhenyi. Ms. Yao's husband went to the Chengzhong Police Station and demanded the release of his family members. It wasn't until 11 p.m. that he was able to bring 12-year-old Wang Zhenyi back home.
Wang Chao was detained on the first floor of the Chengzhong Police Station, while his wife was detained on the fourth floor and his mother on the third floor.
At around 9 a.m. on July 4th, He and Zhou from the 610 Office in Suzhou City, Guan Zhuxing, Sheng Ping, Xiong Jiji and Yang Yonglin from the 610 Office in Kunshan City, Bo Zhiwei, then director of the Chengzhong Police Station, and policeman Zhu Xueming (who was later was promoted to Deputy Director) interrogated Yao Rongzhen and Xie Hongmei in turn. Yao Rongzhen didn't cooperate with them and Zhou hit her face several times. Her mouth bled and six of her teeth were loosened.
At about 7 p.m. on July 4th, Yu Huixing and Yang Yonglin from the 610 Office repeatedly hit Xie Hongmei's face and damaged two of her teeth. Police handcuffed her hands behind her back and lifted them upwards. This torture method is called "Airplane Flying." They threatened her and tried to force her to sign a confession made up by police. She warned them clearly: "One day I will sue you and bring you to justice." They laughed loudly and said: "This will never be possible."
During their detention in the police station, Yao Rongzhen, Wang Chao and Xie Hongmei were not provided with any food.
At 4:30 p.m. on July 5th, police from the Chengzhong Police Station and the 610 Office colluded to forcibly take the three of them to the Kunshan City Detention Centre. Yao Rongzhen was detained in Room 103 of the First Jail Area, Wang Chao in Room 109 (the room chief was a robber by the name of Wang Jian), and Xie Hongmei was detained in Room 103 of the Second Jail Area. Police interrogated Yao Rongzhen repeatedly.
Because there were too many people in the Kunshan City Detention Centre, police transferred Yao Rongzhen and Xie Caidi to the Suzhou Detention Centre and detained them in the Second Jail Area on the second floor for over a week. They were then transferred back to the Kunshan City Detention Centre.
Yao Rongzhen told an inmate in the same room who was from Huaqiao Town, Kunshan City, the wonderfulness of Falun Gong. The inmate started to learn the exercises and experienced Falun Gong's magnificence. But another inmate reported this to a female guard Zhang who handcuffed Yao Rongzhen's hands to the upper part of an iron door and didn't let her sleep for three days and nights and tried to force her to give up her belief. At the same time she kicked Yao's legs with her leather shoes.
The 610 Office in Kunshan City and the Police Department detained Yao Rongzhen at the detention centre for more than one year. On August 6th, 2002, instigated by the City 610 Office, the Kunshan Municipal Court opened a session to trial Yao Rongzhen and Xie Caidi and sentenced them to eight years in jail. They were sent to the Fourteenth Squadron at the Nantong City Women's Prison in Jiangsu Province at the end of August.
The guards in the women's prison tried to brainwash them every day, punished them physically and tried to force them to write repentance statements to denounce Falun Gong. Yao Rongzhen was severely persecuted and she became emaciated rapidly. Her life was in danger. She was released on bail for medical treatment on January 12th, 2005.
From January 12th, 2005 to June this year, officials from the 610 Office in Kunshan City, the Judicial Office in Yushan Town and the Tinglin Community Committee in Kunshan City often came to harass Yao Rongzhen. Every time they were questioned about their names and positions, they didn't answer. The 610 Office in Suzhou City instigated Guan Zuxing, Deputy Director of the 610 Office in Kunshan City and Ma Youjuan, around 40 years old, from the Comprehensive Management Office in Yushan Town to monitor and harass Yao Rongzhen who had become paralysed.
From January 12th, 2005 to the present, the Nantong Women's Prison sends people to visit Yao Rongzhen every year to ask about her situation. They never cease their persecution of Yao Rongzhen and also cause great harm to her family.
