Mr. Cao Dong's wife, Ms. Yang Xiaojing, died as a result of persecution on October 1st, 2009. Her family requested many times to allow Mr. Cao to visit his wife before her death, but all their requests were refused. After her death, Ms. Yang's parents carried her ashes to the prison authorities and begged them to let Mr. Cao see her ashes, but they were also refused.

Mr. Cao has been locked in solitary confinement with his cell windows sealed, and no one is allowed to contact him or to even come close to his cell. One prisoner was curious and tried to see through his covered window, and he was punished with an extended term.
