Ms. Yu Shuhua had many illnesses previously and was very weak, so she took three years of sick leave from her job. In 1996, she began practising Falun Gong, and her illnesses disappeared. Her son also became a practitioner. She helped senior practitioners to study the Falun Gong practitioners and do exercises, and participated in local volunteer assistant work.

After the persecution started on July 20th, 1999, Ms. Yu upheld her belief in Falun Gong. She was prevented twice from going to Beijing to appeal for Falun Gong, and then went to Dalian City to rescue fellow practitioners from detention. The police detained her in the Fuchun Community Police Station.
In November 1999, police arrested and detained her for one month due to practising the Falun Gong exercises outdoors. The police came to her home multiple times to harass her, and forced the university to dismiss her son.
In July 2001, in order to avoid being forced to go to a brainwashing centre, Ms. Yu and her son had to leave home. Whenever they came back home for a little while, the police would immediately come to harass them.
One morning in May 2002, seven to eight plainclothes officers pounded on their door, but they failed in their attempt to arrest them. One time the police picked the lock to open her family's door. During the 2008 Olympic season and the October 1st, 2009 national holiday season, local police and domestic agents were repeatedly looking for her, and threatened her relatives.
Under long term persecution and eight years of living away from home, which was a tremendous pressure on her, she died on October 12th, 2009. Her husband died in 1997, and now their son is all alone.
