After Ms. Zhang Shulan began practising Falun Gong, many of her diseases were healed. However, she and her family have been repeatedly persecuted by the Chinese Communist Party (CCP). Ms. Zhang and her husband were detained in forced labour camps at the same time. The following is an account of what happened to her.
Ms. Zhang's Whole Family Experienced Great Benefits from Practising Falun Gong
Ms. Zhang Shulan suffered from all kinds of diseases: arthritis, anaemia, headaches, heart disease, gall bladder disease; and all of those diseases could be cured by medical treatments. Her husband, Mr. Li Shaotie suffered from heart disease and arteriosclerosis, and thus he couldn't even ride a bicycle. Ms. Zhang's whole family suffered under the burden of their diseases and couldn't afford the huge medical bills.
One day in June 1998, her neighbour introduced her to Falun Gong. Ms. Zhang, her husband and their son all then began to practise it. It only took half a month for them to rid themselves of all of their diseases without any medical treatments. Her eldest son was cured of his laryngitis and her husband got rid of his hot temper. Later on, Ms. Zhang also introduced Falun Gong to her mother, who also suffered from many diseases. She also began to practise Falun Gong and regained her physical and mental health. In this way, more than a dozen of Ms. Zhang's family members all started their cultivation in Falun Gong. Their bodies and minds were all purified and they grasped the true meaning of their lives.
Ms. Zhang's whole family suffered from persecution, and were torn apart. Three of them were detained in prison and had many close encounters with death
On July 20th, 1999 the CCP began to persecute Falun Gong, and people were forbidden from practising Falun Gong. Ms. Zhang Shulan and her husband decided to go to Beijing to seek justice for Falun Gong. Just after they had returned from Beijing, with another policeman, a police officer named Wang, from Xiangyang Police Station ransacked their homes. Her youngest son who was studying at a university in Beijing saw them taking Ms. Zhang away and he did not let them go. The police officer Wang deceived him by telling him that later on his mother would be allowed to come back from Xiangyang Police Station after she was interrogated. Upon arriving at the Xiangyang Police Station, they asked Ms. Zhang Shulan whether she would insist in practising Falun Gong. Ms. Zhang Shulan said, "Yes, Falun Gong is so good that through cultivation, my previous diseases have all been cured!" Ms. Zhang Shulan's youngest son noticed that his mother was not coming back, so he went to Xiangyang Police Station to ask for his mother. He asked them, "Didn't you guys tell me that my mother would be home soon? Several hours have passed, why haven't you let her go?" They replied, "We have no choice, your mother said she would still practise Falun Gong so she is not allowed to go home." Zhang Shulan's youngest son went home, crying.
Later on that night, the policemen sent Zhang Shulan to the Southern Detention Centre at 10pm. When she arrived there, she found that her husband had been taken there by Sun Weiyang in Beijing and held there for several days. Sun Weiyang robbed him of seven hundred and ninety yuan1 in cash. Ms. Zhang was held at Southern Prison for two months and was forced to write a statement to give up the practice of Falun Gong, after which she was released. The deputy director of the Police Department, Mr. Sun Yanfeng, extorted one thousand yuan from her family members without a receipt.
After being released, Ms. Zhang Shulan and her husband went to practice Falun Gong at a river side, however they were driven away by the police. While they were practising Falun Gong in their own backyard, the police sent their neighbours to monitor them and interfere with their practising Falun Gong.
On June 14th, 2000, police officer Wang and other two others from the Xiangyang Police Station went to the studio that Zhang Shulan rented to repair shoes for a living. They deceived the couple and took them to the Xiangyang Police Station.
The deputy director, Sun Yanfeng asked them whether they still insisted in practising Falun Gong. Ms. Zhang Shulan said yes. Sun then returned Ms. Zhang and her husband to the Southern Detention Centre against their will. Afterward a group of police officers went to Zhang's home and took their eldest son to the Southern Prison.
This time, Ms. Zhang Shulan was sentenced to one year of forced labour, and to two years. Dozens of Falun Gong practitioners in Fujin City were sentenced at the same time. When Ms. Zhang was leaving for Jiamusi Labour Camp on that morning, her youngest son and her niece came to see her off. Her youngest son had just received an admission letter to a graduate school. He saw that both of his parents were brought to a police wagon, and the police did not allow him to speak to his parents. He stood there painfully with tears falling from his eyes, non-stop. Ms. Zhang's niece was so anxious that she stamped her feet while crying out: "Ooh my aunt, my aunt!" She was so grieved that she fainted and fell to the ground. The policemen yelled, "Record this quickly, a Falun Gong practitioner is so indifferent that they abandon their children!" Dozens of Falun Gong practitioners from Qitaihe County, Shuangyashan City, Hegang City were sent to Jiamusi Labour Camp this day, with more than ten trucks required to transport them.
When Ms. Zhang Shulan and her husband were taken away, only her mother and her father stayed at her home to take care of her family. However, they are all over eighty years old. Police officer Wang harassed them every few days, saying that he was going to take away Ms. Zhang's mother as well. As a result, Ms. Zhang's father was so frightened that his whole body was shaking and his legs were shivering. He held his wife's clothes tightly and followed her wherever she went. He dared not let her go.
On New Year's Eve of 2001, the Director of Xiangyang Police Station, Wang Guozhu learned that Ms. Zhang Shulan had been released before her term was up. He led two policemen (one named Wang) to Ms. Zhang's family to harass them again.
Since Ms. Zhang Shulan, her husband and her eldest son were all put in prison, nobody took care of her youngest son. In order to finish his graduate courses, he took 10,000 yuan from his home for his tuition. He wrote papers to earn royalties and found temporary jobs to help pay his tuition. Finally, he successfully gained his Master's degree.
Ms. Zhang Shulan's husband, Mr. Li Shaotie was detained at Jiamusi Forced Labour Camp for two years. He suffered from inhuman torture for days at a time during those two years. Since 2004, he was detained at Suihua Forced Labour Camp for total three years. During that period, he was cruelly persecuted by more than ten different torture methods and had been at the brink of death more than ten times. He wasn't released until he was in critical condition.
