On the afternoon of July 14th, officials from Shuangta District Court in Chaoyang City, Liaoning Province, tried Falun Gong practitioners Ms. Jia Guiqin and her husband, Li Hua, in the city intermediate court.
During the trial, Ms. Jia exposed the persecution by the Communist regime, refuted the charges made up by the judges and the prosecutor, and shouted, "Falun Gong is righteous!" The trial was hastily ended.
The couple were taken from their home by police on May 24th. The police took away their personal belongings, including a computer, Falun Gong books, and all their savings of over 70,000 yuan1 in cash as well as other items.
They were detained in Wujiawa Detention Centre. During this time, their children and relatives went to the city police department, Shuangta District Court, and the Procuratorate to appeal.
Two days before the trial, Guangming Police Station sent three officers to pick up Ms. Jia's daughter-in-law. They threatened her for several hours and forced her to reveal the names of the relatives she had gone with to appeal for the couple. At the same time, Judge Bai Lan from Shuangta District Court kept harassing the couple's family members to keep them from hiring a lawyer. As a result, at the time of the trial, the couple did not have a lawyer to defend them in court.
During the trial, the prosecutor, Liu Fei from the Shuangta District Procuratorate, attacked and slandered Falun Gong. He claimed that, since 2002, he has been responsible for the conviction of every Falun Gong practitioner in the Shuangta District of Chaoyang City. He was a key participant in the case against practitioner Ms. Tang Jinli, which took place a few months ago. In that case, the police, Procuratorate, and court collaborated with the 610 Office (an organisation of special agents just for persecuting Falun Gong) to fabricate charges against Ms. Tang, who was subsequently sentenced to three years of imprisonment.
The Political and Judiciary Committee in Chaoyang City and the division of the Political and Security Section of the city police department are the government entities responsible for the fabricated case against Ms. Jia and Mr. Li.
