Falun Gong practitioners Ms. Liu Zezhi and Ms. Li Fang'e from Guangshan County, Henan Province were arrested around May 1st, 2010, as they distributed Falun Gong information. The county 610 Office [an agency specifically created to persecute Falun Gong] agents made the arrest, and manipulated the county court officials to sentence the two practitioners.
Ms. Liu Zezhi, 45 years old, went to the countryside on the morning of April 30th, 2010 to a commodities fair. As she walked to the middle of the venue, she suddenly saw Ms. Li Fang'e surrounded by a crowd of people. Ms. Liu immediately walked up to try to help resolve the problem. She spoke with surrounding people about the persecution suffered by Falun Gong. Xiong Benxiu and Wu Zhengzhi were among the crowd and called the county 610 Office. The police arrived and took the two practitioners to the county police department and detained them for ten hours. Because the police could not find any evidence showing that Ms. Liu had distributed Falun Gong materials, the practitioners were released at 6:00 p.m. that same day.
A week later, around 6:00 a.m., on May 7th, officers Zhang Rongzhen and Xu Lin from the Guangshan County 610 Office and others suddenly broke into Ms. Liu's rented home. They ransacked her home, confiscated small banners reading "Falun Gong is good," Falun Gong books and other personal belongings, and took them as evidence. They then took Ms. Liu to the local detention centre, and on July 7th they ordered the county Procurator to prosecute Ms. Liu and Ms. Li. They proceeded to manipulate the county court officials to sentence the two practitioners and on October 2th, they were sentenced. Ms. Liu was given a four-year prison term; Ms. Li was given a three-year prison term with a five-year probation. Ms. Liu is currently in the Guangshan County Detention Centre, and 73-year-old Ms. Li has been placed under house arrest.
Ms. Liu Zezhi had been subjected to persecution many times before. When she was released from the Shibalihe Forced Labour Camp in Zhengzhou City in 2004, her husband forbade her to return home. She had to rent a house in the county and live with her daughter. She worked part time to support her daughter's education until her daughter went to college last year. Upon learning about her mother's illegal sentencing, Ms. Liu's daughter was filled with grief and indignation.
