Mr. Qian Jierong has been arrested several times since the persecution of Falun Gong started in July 1999. The first time was in 2001, when he was detained for more than ten days.
In November 2006, Mr. Qian was arrested for distributing materials about the persecution of Falun Gong, and was sentenced to one year of forced labour. During his detention at Jinxing Police Station in the Nanchang District of Wuxi, Mr. Qian was beaten so badly that he lost his hearing and some of his teeth were knocked out. He was mentally traumatised, and he sometimes screamed out of fear during the night. Nine days after the beating, officials from the Forced Labour Bureau transferred him to Wuxi 2nd Detention Centre instead of a forced labour camp.
Mr. Qian was arrested again in 2008, and was detained at Wuxi 2nd Detention Centre again.
Five police officers broke into Mr. Qian's home on August 27th, 2010. Some of them kicked the door open, while others broke in through the windows. They ransacked his home and took him to a room in the Longshan Hotel in Wuxi. He was detained there for ten days. A police officer ordered him to sleep on the floor, but when Mr. Qian refused, the officer punched him in the head. Mr. Qian had headaches even after he was allowed to return home.
