Family Devastated by Years of Persecution

Ms. Fu Yan from Dashiqiao, Liaoning Province was sentenced to thirteen years and six months in prison, and has been detained for the past ten years. On September 9th, 2010, her mother, Tong Shuping, asked a Beijing attorney to file an appeal for Ms. Fu. The Liaoning Women’s Prison refused the attorney's visit, providing multiple excuses. Prison officials subsequently escalated her persecution and confined Ms. Fu to a small room. The attorney’s licence was revoked in late 2010. Tong Shuping passed away one week later on March 5th, after she received notification that the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) court had rejected her daughter's appeal.

Tong Shuping Persecuted Repeatedly by the CCP

Ms. Tong Shuping was 78 years old, and lived in Dashiqiao, Liaoning Province. She had previously suffered from multiple illnesses, including diabetes, heart disease, and colitis. She sought treatment for a long time, but nothing helped. Ms. Tong visited Beijing in 1998, where she was fortunate to be introduced to Falun Gong, and started to practise. Afterwards, all of her illnesses disappeared, and she hadn't taken medicine for the past 13 years.

The CCP started persecuting Falun Gong in 1999. Ms. Tong went to Beijing in May 2000 to speak out for the right to practise Falun Gong. She was taken back to Dashiqiao and detained for 15 days. In early 2001, she was forced to become homeless and destitute in order to avoid being arrested at her home. In August 2001, Ms. Tong was taken from her daughter’s home back to Dashiqiao where she was detained for four months. In July 2002, Ms. Tong was taken to the brainwashing centre at the Yingkou Detention Centre and detained there for two weeks.

Daughter Fu Qiang Held for Three Years in Forced Labour Camp

Ms. Tong’s daughter Fu Qiang was paralysed, and in a disabled condition for many years. Her health returned after she started practising Falun Gong, providing her an opportunity for a normal life. In 1999, Ms. Fu wrote to the state authorities, explaining how she benefited from practising Falun Gong. As a result, she was detained for two weeks, then sent to a forced labour camp for a three-year term. Later, she was released on bail for medical treatment. In 2002, she was taken to the brainwashing centre in the Yingkou Detention Centre and detained there for two weeks.

Daughter Fu Ying Sentenced to Nine Years in Prison

Ms. Tong’s other daughter Fu Ying is a talented writer. She authored the personal poem collection Silent Girl, and collaborated with others on Enjoy Sadness.

Ms. Fu Ying was detained for 15 days at the Lishan Police Department in Anshan, Liaoning Province in 1999, because she appealed for the right to practise Falun Gong. During her detention, she was forced to miss work at the Anshan Gas Company.

In 2000, Fu Ying was arrested at Tiananmen Square. The Tiedong District Police Department detained her for 15 days, and she was fined 5,000 yuan¹ at the Lushan Police Station.

In July 2001, officers from the Chaoyang Police Department took 34 year-old Fu Ying from her rented apartment in the Beijing Asian Games Village. The Beijing Intermediate Court sentenced her to nine years in prison. In April 2003, she was transferred to the Liaoning Women’s Prison. During her nine-year detention, her appearance totally changed as a result of persecution, and her hair turned grey. She wrote several poems in prison, but wasn't allowed to take them with her when she was released.

Daughter Fu Yan Sentenced to Thirteen Years and Six Months in Prison

Ms. Tong’s daughter Fu Yan was in Beijing on business in August 2001, when she was taken by police from her home to the Masanjia Women's Forced Labour Camp, where she subsequently served a three-year term.

Ms. Li Yanhua’s death case was exposed in 2003, on the Clearwisdom website. On February 17th, 2003, Dashiqiao police arrested six local practitioners and transferred Fu Yan from the forced labour camp to a detention center. Ms. Fu was subsequently sentenced to eight years in prison.

In the Dashiqiao Detention Centre, Ms. Fu showed symptoms of heart disease and hypertension, and was taken to a hospital for treatment. She later managed to walk away from the hospital. Two months later, she was arrested again in Anshan and taken to the Liaoning Women’s Prison. Officers from the Dashiqiao Court extended her term by five years and six months for a total term of thirteen and a half years.

Ms. Tong’s Family Broken Due to Persecution

In 2001, Ms. Tong Shuping was hospitalised due to trauma after her two daughters Fu Ying and Fu Yan were arrested. In 2003, after her two daughters were taken to the Liaoning Women’s Prison, Ms. Tong and her husband Fu Chengyong took care of Ms. Fu Yan’s three year-old daughter, little Qingquan who was experiencing a very hard life. They travelled monthly from Dashiqiao to the Liaoning Women’s Prison.
Mr. Fu Chengyong passed away in 2008 due to the severe trauma and pressure. Three months later, his third son-in-law suddenly passed away, leaving his disabled wife and two year-old daughter alone. The whole family now consisted of women and children.

Ms. Tong filed an appeal with the Yingkou Intermediate Court for her daughter Fu Yan's release in 2009. The appeal was rejected without any reason provided. Since December 2009, the Liaoning Women’s Prison has refused visitation rights for Ms. Fu’s family.

In April 2010, Ms. Tong’s oldest daughter Fu Wen suffered from a cerebral haemorrhage, and subsequently became bedridden.

Ms. Tong asked Beijing Attorney Zhang Chuanli in September 2010 to submit an appeal for her daughter Fu Yan's release, and paid 10,000 yuan that she'd saved. However, the prison officials refused to allow Attorney Zhang Chuanli to visit Fu Yan, providing multiple excuses.

Ms. Fu Yan was part of a happy family prior to her persecution. Due to her long prison term, her husband divorced her in 2010, after nine years of incarceration. After Ms. Fu Yan's sentencing, her young daughter Qingquan had to live with her grandparents. In the past ten years, little Qingquan experienced extended separation, and her mother has only a vague recollection of her childhood years. Qingquan is now 13 years old, and about to enter middle school. However, both of her grandparents have passed away. Where will she live?

Ms. Tong’s family was persecuted and broken up by the CCP, simply because they believed in Truthfulness-Compassion-Forbearance.
