Ms. Zhan Guilin from Taibus, Inner Mongolia Persecuted

Since Ms. Zhan Guilin was young, she had many illnesses. She had been to many different hospitals for treatment, but her illnesses could not be cured. Ms. Zhan never went to school and was unable to write her own name. After she practised Falun Gong in 1998, her illnesses soon disappeared.

Ms. Zhan conducted herself according to the principles of Truthfulness-Compassion-Forbearance. She took care of her sick parents and also her elderly mother-in-law. She never complained and always treated people with sincere kindness.

After the Chinese Communist Party started persecuting Falun Gong, officials from the 610 Office (an organisation of special agents just for persecuting Falun Gong), Domestic Security Division, police station and the neighbourhood community often monitored and harassed Ms. Zhan and her family. Ms. Zhan’s husband, Mr. Zhang Xinguo, didn’t oppose her practice because he had witnessed the improvements in his wife's health. However, they had to leave their home in order to avoid being persecuted, and stay with their son in the Huangqi area of Inner Mongolia.

When Zhang Jianguo, from the Qiwei 610 Office, found out where they were staying, he and officials from the Huangqi 610 Office and the police department went to Ms. Zhan's son's workplace to force the company's leaders to put pressure on him. The company head told Ms. Zhan's son that he would be promoted if he was able to stop his mother from practising Falun Gong; otherwise, he would be demoted. Under such pressure, and in an attempt to force his mother to give up her belief, he swallowed some poison, which almost killed him. Mr. Zhang was so distraught from this incident that he had a heart attack. As a result, the whole family had to go to Beijing to seek medical treatment for him.

Zhang Jianguo and Wang Ruijun from the Taibus Domestic Security Division often called Mr. Zhang Xinguo and his son to threaten them. Mr. Zhang locked his wife inside their house because of the endless bullying and intimidation by the authorities. However, plainclothes police still monitored Ms. Zhan.

On the morning of May 10th, Wang Ruijun and four policemen arrived at the Huanqi area and immediately called Mr. Zhang to tell him to meet them outside. They said that that he must cooperate with them.

Around 2:00 p.m. that afternoon, Wang Ruijun and another policeman broke into Ms. Zhan's son's home. He began shouting and swearing at Ms. Zhan, and repeatedly tried to force her to slander Falun Gong. Ms. Zhan said to him, “Since I started practising Falun Gong, all my illnesses have disappeared. It is Falun Gong that has saved me." Wang Ruijun became very angry and shouted, “If you don't curse your Teacher, I will take you to the Ximeng Brainwashing Centre and your son's job will be affected.” He ordered Ms. Zhan to tell him about other practitioners she knew, and when and where they met. Wang Ruijun ordered Mr. Zhang to force his wife to tell him what he wanted to know, and then made him write a guarantee statement to renounce practising Falun Gong and told Ms. Zhan to sign it. When she refused, Wang Ruijun forcibly grabbed her hand to take her fingerprints and put them on the statement.
