Three Falun Gong practitioners were arrested in Chengdu City, Sichuan Province around 8 p.m. on June 9th, by 20-30 people, including all of the police officers from Jiujiang Police Station. These three practitioners jointly opened a tea shop in Chengdu. They are Ms. Wang Hongxia, originally an English teacher at Anyue Teachers Training School, Mr. Shi Bingjun originally from Wuxi City, Jiangsu Province, and Mr. Wei Kedong, originally from Tonghua City, Jilin Province. The three practitioners were arrested after work at their apartments, where their personal property was also stolen.
Family members went to Jiujiang Police Station to inquire about the arrests and were given no information. The police station said the National Security Bureau had arrested the practitioners and the police station was merely cooperating and did not know where the practitioners were taken.
An informed source disclosed that the three practitioners were sent to Xinjin Brainwashing Centre, which is officially named the Chengdu City Legal Education Centre.
On July 7th, several relatives and lawyers of the three practitioners, including Mr. Wei's son, travelled a long distance to Chengdu and went to the Xinjin Brainwashing Centre to ask that the practitioners be released. The people who answered the door refused to confirm that the three practitioners were there and refused to let the relatives go inside to see for themselves. After several attempts to negotiate, the relatives called the police, reported that their family members unjustly detained. The police came but when they saw it was a “Legal Education Centre,” they said they couldn't do much and left.
With nothing they could do, the relatives began to shout out the practitioners' names at the old building where Falun Gong practitioners are usually detained. “Wang Hongxia, we are here to see you”, “Shi Bingjun, we are here to see you” … and the three practitioners' responses were heard. Then, Ms. Wang appeared at the second floor window and shouted, “I'm here!” She also yelled that she was beaten by Bao Xiaomu of the brainwashing centre. There were two people standing on each side of Ms. Wang and they closed the curtain after only a few minutes. Mr. Wei said several sentences in response to his son from the room where he was detained. He mentioned that he had been beaten. Later, the relatives shouted to the personnel inside and urged them to stop the persecution.
After the relatives requested visitation again and again, they were finally led into a meeting room. Led by Yin Shunyao, over 30 people, including police, were there. They refused to let Mr. Wei's son see his father because they did not have “proof of identity and proof of family ties issued by the police station.”
According to the informed source, the three practitioners were first detained at an unknown location for two days. They were then sent to the brainwashing centre afterward.
The so-called “Chengdu City Legal Education Centre” is actually the Xinjin Brainwashing Centre. Since 2003, over 1,000 Falun Gong practitioners have been persecuted there. Within the past three to four months, at least 40 to 50 Falun Gong practitioners were detained there and forced to undergo brainwashing. Besides brainwashing, the Xinjin Brainwashing Centre carries out torture and pressures “confessions” from Falun Gong practitioners. Many Falun Gong practitioners, including Mr. Jiang Yunhong, Ms. Yan Xiaoping, Ms. Ding Zeyang, Ms. Deng Xiaoming, and others were first detained there before they were sentenced.
