Celebrating the Mid-Autumn/Moon Festival
2003-09-18On the 15th day of the 8th month of the lunar calendar, the moon is round and the Chinese people mark their Moon (or Mid-autumn) Festival. This year it falls on September 11 on the western calendar. In honor of the festival, here are some card, poems and some brief legends. -

Study Shows Brain Activity Influences Immune Function
2003-09-15By monitoring activity levels in the human brain's prefrontal cortex, the researchers demonstrate for the first time that people who have more activity in the left side of this area also have a stronger immune response against disease. The findings, soon to be published in the on-line edition of the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, pinpoint one of the mechanisms underlying the link between mental and physical well-being. -

Stories From Ancient China: Wang Cizhong Creates Chinese Characters
2003-09-14The Emperors messenger went to see Wang Cizhong and told him about the Emperors order. Wang was not angry and said nothing. Then he became a beautiful great bird and flew into the blue sky. The messenger was startled and scared. He kneeled down and kowtowed to the bird ceaselessly. He said, Wang Cizhong, you became a bird and flew away. But how can I report that to the Emperor? He will kill me! I know you are a Deity. Please save me! The great bird hovered for a while, dropping three feathers to him intentionally. The messenger had to take these feathers back for the Emperor to see. -

Sage Improves Memory, Study Shows
2003-09-13The team, from the Medicinal Plant Research Centre (MPRC) at the Universities of Newcastle and Northumbria, UK, have provided scientific evidence for claims dating back centuries. They studied texts by well-known herbalists such as John Gerard, who wrote about sage in 1597, saying that It is singularly good for the head and brain and quickeneth the nerves and memory, and Nicholas Culpeper, whose 1652 text says It also heals the memory, warming and quickening the senses. -
