Mr. Hu Chuanlin, a Falun Gong practitioner and Beijing International Studies University employee, was abducted from his office by local police on September 21st, 2012. His wife Huang Ling and thirteen-year-old son had to leave their home to avoid further persecution.
Mr. Hu has been harassed and threatened with brainwashing by Beijing Municipal Education Commission and Beijing International Studies University. We have learned that the Sanjianfang Police Station and Police Department Chaoyang Branch were responsible for his abduction under the direction of the 14th Division of the Beijing Police Department. Mr. Hu is still detained at the Chaoyang Detention Centre.
Police cars arrived at Mr. Hu's university around noon on September 21st. His wife happened to call him at his office at that time. All he could say was, “Police officers are talking to me...”, and then the phone call was cut off.
Two officers of the 14th Division of the Beijing Police Department went to talk to Huang at her workplace on Sept. 17th, demanding that she guarantee she wouldn't go anywhere before the 18th National Congress of the Communist Party. When they asked for her address, she refused to answer. The officers questioned her for half an hour.
Mr. Hu had been sent to a forced labour camp for two years in September 2007. He went back to work in 2009 but his position had been changed and he was demoted. Mr. Hu worked hard in his new position, and his excellent work was widely recognised by his colleagues. However, the 14th Division of the Police Department and the Beijing Municipal Education Commission continued to harass him. The Education Commission threatened to send him to brainwashing sessions three times. Mr. Hu wrote an open letter to the leaders and the Security Department of his university in July of this year, exposing the persecution of Falun Gong.
The following is an excerpt from Hu Chuanlin's open letter:
My family and I have been subjected to terrible persecution for more than ten years. On September 11th, 2007, more than thirty policemen from Beijing Domestic Security Division and Fengtai Police Station abducted me and my wife from our workplaces. A group of them beat me and kicked me during the abduction. One of them covered my mouth with his hand. My home was searched. My computer and personal belongs were confiscated. I was interrogated and thrown into a forced labour camp based on fabricated evidence. The process was carried out in secret. I was taken into a small room in the Jingfeng Hotel on September 11th. A single bed was in the room. Police officers blocked the door with a big couch. More than ten of them took turns interrogating me every day. Their main methods were to use deceit and threats. They would not tell me their names. I was not allowed to rest and was denied toilet use. They attempted to force me to give up my cultivation of Falun Gong using extreme mental pressure tactics. One police officer in his thirties kept cursing at me. He hit my head with a hardcover book and beat me badly when nobody was around. A plainclothes policeman sprayed some poisonous liquid on me. It was so strong that he kept coughing. He took out handcuffs and threatened me with torture. He also made me take off my glasses and punched me about my eyes. All night long I could hear the cries of female Falun Gong practitioners and policemen's' curses coming from the other rooms. The so-called “Legal Studies Sessions” in Jingfeng Hotel is in fact a jail for the Chinese Communist Party. They eventually sent me to a forced labour camp.
I was often deprived of sleep and forced to sit on a small bench (a torture method in which victims are forced to sit still on the edge of a bench with hands and knees together) at the labour camp. Other torture methods I was subjected to included standing still or squatting for long periods of time, holding my head down and doing physical exercises for extended periods of time, electric shocks, all kinds of threats, being monitored by inmates, being verbally abused and cursed at and many other methods of abuse. When I refused to be transformed [forcibly renounce Falun Gong], I was locked in a small, dark cell. I was also monitored by four inmates, and forbidden to take a shower or sleep. They reduced the portion sizes of my meals. No family members were allowed to visit me or write to me. I was even denied toilet use. My health was seriously harmed after being persecuted in the forced labour camp. My hair turned grey. My stomach often hurt, and I lost a lot of weight.
An elderly man who shared the cell with me had low blood pressure, but he was forced to take medicine that lowers blood pressure. They threatened to extend his term if he refused to take it. The elderly man took it and had difficulty standing or breathing, but he wasn't allowed to lie down. A Falun Gong practitioner, professor and Ph.D. adviser from China Science Academy was forced to sit without moving on a small chair for two months even though he was already in his sixties. Jailers ordered drug-addict inmates to beat a computer professional who refused to be transformed. They poured cold water over him, denied him toilet use for fifteen days, and deprived him of sleep for eighteen days. Another Beijing practitioner was shocked simultaneously with several electric batons for refusing to transform. An elderly Falun Gong practitioner from Huairou was dragged to a toilet and repeatedly thrown against heating pipes until blood covered his face. When he reported the abuse, the labour camp personnel claimed he had harmed himself.
We were forced to do slave labour without pay. The products we made included food packages, chopsticks, diet tea, stamp albums and packaging boxes for electronic products.
