Individual Accounts

  • Practitioner Jin Lihong Injected with Unknown Drug in Heilongjiang Province Women's Prison

Ms. Jin Lihong was injected with an unknown drug in February or March 2006 when she was imprisoned in Heilongjiang Province Women's Prison. It caused her to suffer enormously, both mentally and physically. She recounts: "One day when I was standing in front of a window and looking at a pot of flowers, my tongue stuck out involuntarily. Things later got worse. My tongue became thick and purple and stuck out all the time. Later, when I was working on some of the prison's accounts, I realised that I was unable to do the maths. My brain didn't function well."
  • Older Practitioner Ms. Fu Guiqin's First-hand Account of the Long-term Persecution She Has Suffered

Falun Gong practitioner Ms. Fu Guiqin, 59, has suffered repeated persecution spanning over a decade, including multiple arrests, detentions, forced labour, brainwashing, and torture. In her own words he recounts the torture at Wanjia Forced Labour Camp: "All of the Falun Gong practitioners were on a hunger strike to protest the detention. On the sixth day, the guards gathered all the practitioners into a queue and tried to stop our hunger protest by force-feeding us. Criminal inmates and guards pinned each of us down to a chair, and forcibly fed us with corn paste from a small plastic basin. Sometimes they also inserted a rubber tube into our noses and down to our stomachs to force-feed us. The food came out of my nose and blood came out of my mouth. They tortured me like this every day for about a month."
  • Eyewitness Account of the Beginning of the Persecution on July 20th, 1999

Some people who are unaware of the facts about Falun Gong have been misled by the propaganda of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP). They think that too many followers dared to voice their opinion to the top leadership, which upset the CCP and resulted in their suppression. I would like to recall some personal encounters at practice sites and outside the city and provincial government buildings before and after July 20th, 1999. We will see that the suppression of Falun Gong had long been in the planning. As early as 1996, the CCP started investigating Falun Gong openly and covertly, and it tried hard to find fault with Falun Gong. Failing to find anything, it tried to arrange certain events to make it look like Falun Gong practitioners were causing trouble, so as to mislead the population.
  • Ms. Zhang Lianying Tortured at Masanjia Labour Camp

After Ms. Zhang arrived in Masanjia, she was tortured continuously. Since she believed that it was not wrong to practise Falun Gong and be a good person, she did not co-operate with the demands of the Labour Camp. She endured almost every torture method at Masanjia, including being stretched, tortured with an electric baton, and beaten with a baton hung up,. Pus could be seen on her wrists because the handcuffs were too tight. She went on a hunger strike, and a female guard supervisor used a metal spoon to pry open her mouth, leaving a scar. Under her arms and between her legs, there were dense black burn marks from the electric baton.
  • Mr. Li Rongtang, 61, from Heilongjiang Province Imprisoned and Tortured

Mr. Li Rongtang has been arrested several times, simply because he firmly believes in the principles of Truthfulness-Compassion-Forbearance, and wanted to speak out on the side of justice for Falun Gong. He was twice sentenced to a forced labour camp term, and to a six-year prison term. Mr. Li refused to renounce his belief and was brutally tortured. In prison guards beat Mr. Li, deprived him of sleep and shocked him with an electric baton.
  • Mr. Yang Yongli Tells about the Persecution that He Has Been Through

When the persecution started in 1999, Mr. Yang Yongli went to Beijing hoping to appeal against the persecution of Falun Gong to the authorities. Instead of listening, the authorities arrested him and sent him to a forced labour camp. When he tried to persuade the leader of the 610 Office (an organisation of special agents just for persecuting Falun Gong) to stop the persecution, he was detained again. He was later sentenced for practising Falun Gong at home. While serving his sentence he was pressured to "confess" many times and was beaten by both guards and prisoners.
  • The Gross Abuse I Suffered in Masanjia Forced Labour Camp, Liaoning Province

I was detained in Masanjia Labour Camp in September 2007. I was subjected to various kinds of brutal mistreatments. As a result of the torture, my left hand is still numb, and there is still swelling at the base of my fingers. At the beginning of my incarceration, the guards assigned me to work daily with items involving the use of white glue (polyvinyl acetate, or PAVc). PAVc is a toxic substance and can lead to allergy, asthma, or other respiratory problems. Not long after, my blood pressure shot up to 160/100. I had blood in my sputum, had difficulty breathing, and developed other allergic reactions.
  • Falun Gong Practitioner Mr. Ding Fadong Has Endured Severe Abuse in Detention Centres and Labour Camps

On July 20th, 1999, the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) head, Jiang Zemin, launched the unconstitutional persecution of Falun Gong across the nation. I was arrested by the police on numerous occasions simply for telling fellow villagers about the benefits of Falun Gong and the unreasonable persecution practitioners were being put through. I was held in custody and sentenced to forced labour three times, which left me subject to extended hours of forced servitude, while guards and inmates carried out inhuman torture and conducted brainwashing sessions on me.
  • Mum, When Can You Come Home?

Ms. Ma Chunli was almost paralyzed, but after starting to practise Falun Gong, she could not only stand up again, she could also do light housework. She and her son Zhao Xin lived together. They often relied on their relatives for support. On March 17th, 2001, Ms. Ma was arrested by police and sent to a forced labour camp for two years. Her son accompanied by other Falun Gong practitioners went to the police station to ask for the release of Ms. Ma; however, they were detained and beaten. It is believed that Ms. Ma is again paralyzed due to abuse suffered in the forced labour camp and she can no longer take care of herself.

Police ransacked my apartment again before the Olympics in August 2008. They didn't find any materials yet they took me to Xinchang Police Station. I saw there were three fellow practitioners who had already been locked up to a tree. Policemen tortured us for a confession and asked me about where I kept Falun Gong materials, but I didn't tell them. They got nothing from me in the end.

I have been detained in Heizuizi Women's Forced Labour Camp since June 3rd, 2008, and have been subjected to various forms of brutal torture. When I was seen doing the Falun Gong exercises I was forced to stop. I was kicked by guard Wei Dan, and hit around the head by guard Ye Ying, while being dragged to the guards' office. In the office the two guards used six electric batons to shock me. As one electric baton broke, they charged the remaining batons to ensure they always had one to shock me with. Sometimes they used two batons together. Ye Ying also kicked me in the stomach, lower abdomen and thighs.

Then they handcuffed my hands and feet, put a two-metre wooden bar though the circle formed by my hands and feet, lifted it up and swung me. My hair was soaked in sweat immediately, and I felt dizzy. Then they put me down on a sofa, lifted my arms to the sides forming a straight line, and handcuffed each one to a rail. The brace was so heavy that I had to hang down my head. My arms hurt terribly."

Police took me to the Peide Hospital. A director told me that I had to stay in the hospital whether I wished to or not. They wanted to give me injections, test my blood and put me on an intravenous drip, but I was determined not to co-operate. They tied me to a bed using long, heavy chains from 8:00 p.m. until dawn every day, even though I was weak. The weight of the chains caused me severe pain.

Falun Gong practitioner Ms. Liu Li was tortured for one-and-a-half years while imprisoned in the Hebei Province Women's Forced Labour Camp between June 30th, 2008 and October 19th, 2009. Some of the more severe instances of persecution are as follows: She was tortured with hanging for nine full days. Prison guards ripped off her shirt and used an electric baton to shock her nipples. A guard struck Ms. Liu in the head with an electric baton, which caused severe bleeding. Ms. Liu was in critical condition by the time she was released in January 2010.
