• Ms. Yang Shufen Sentenced to Eight Years Imprisonment in Xishui County, Hubei Province

  After Jiang Zemin's [former leader of China and instigator of the persecution] regime began the persecution of Falun Gong in 1999, Ms. Yang Shufen, 44 years old, went to Beijing to appeal for justice and was arrested by the Beijing police. After that she endured repeated arrests by police. In April 2007, police arrested her in Wuhan City. After she was imprisoned for over a year at the Xishui Detention Centre, she was sentenced to an additional eight years on a fabricated charge. Her appeal was turned down. In the beginning of September 2008, she was taken to the Wuhan Women's Prison. Since then, her family has not received any messages or information about her current situation and are deeply concerned about her safety.

• 60-Year-Old Practitioner Tortured at Hohhot Forced Labour Camp

  On July 4th, 2005, I was reported to the police while I distributed Falun Gong fliers in a remote mountainous area. Police arrested me and detained me at the Ningcheng County Detention Centre. Officer Lu Zhihe handcuffed me to an iron chair, slapped me, hit my head with a metal clip. On December 13th, 2005, I was sentenced to three years of forced labour. The camp tried to coerce me to "transform" [forcibly renounce Falun Gong], but I refused. I was nearly sixty years old. I was forced to shoulder goods up and down stairs between different floors. I passed out from exhaustion. One day, I fell down the stairs because I became faint due to my high blood pressure. My leg was injured and I was unable to stand up.

• Please Help Rescue My Mother, Detained for the Fifth Time for Practising Falun Gong

  My 65-year-old mother's name is Fu Shaozhen. She was arrested on December 25th, 2007 for distributing leaflets exposing the persecution. The Wuhan 610 Office deceived my family by saying that they would release my mother immediately after the Olympic Games was over. The Olympic Games has finished, but my mother has not been released. She is still imprisoned and being tortured.

• China Central Television Broadcasts a Fabricated Programme about a Falun Gong Practitioner in Beijing Women's Forced Labour Camp

  CCTV's (China Central Television's) "Sky Net" TV programme showed a prison guard patiently and kindly helping to "transform" a so-called "Falun Gong practitioner." After seeing this, everyone was startled, because that so-called Falun Gong practitioner was, in fact, not a practitioner at all, but a criminal inmate. What actually takes place there is that, if you aren't "transformed" (that is, if you don't succumb to the pressure and renounce your belief in Falun Gong), you aren't allowed to sleep and you're insulted, beaten, and scolded, among other forms of torture. CCTV and Beijing Women's Forced Labour Camp colluded to create a false news story to deceive the Chinese public.

• Nearly Seventy-year-old Mr. Gao Guangchong Sent to Forced Labour Camp in Sichuan Province

  After the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) started persecuting Falun Gong in July 1999, elderly Mr. Gao Guangchong was arrested eleven times. He was imprisoned in forced labour camps on numerous occasions, suffering inhumane torture each time. His home was often ransacked and twice he was forced into homelessness to avoid being arrested. On October 14th, 2007, over thirty police officers forcibly entered Mr. Gao's home and arrested him. On March 28th, 2008, the Huili County CCP Procuratorate and Court put Mr. Gao on trial. As a result of the torture he suffered while being detained, Mr. Gao's whole body was severely swollen from oedema, making it very difficult for him to stand. In September 2008 Mr. Gao's family members were finally informed that he had been sentenced to three years in a Forced Labour Camp and was taken there on October 16th, 2008.

• Ms. He Xueping Arrested Again After Recent Release from Labour Camp

  Ms. He Xueping, a practitioner from Zhuhai City, Guangdong Province, has been suffering from the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) persecution for a long time. She had just been released from Sanshui Women's Forced Labour Camp on June 30th, 2008, when she was arrested again on September 2nd. Informants stated that Ms. He Xueping's current arrest was made in retaliation for her report on the persecution in the Sanshui Forced Labour Camp.

• Masanjia Labour Camp Guards Torture Practitioners to Get Them to Sign a Labour Evaluation Sheet

  On October 6th, 2008, guards at Masanjia Forced Labour Camp in Shenyang tried to force Falun Gong practitioners confined in the First Division to sign a Labour Evaluation Sheet. When practitioners refused to sign, they were severely tortured. They were no longer able to walk upright afterwards. The guards pushed practitioners' heads under a bed and handcuffed them. Ms. Wang Chunying and Ms. Wang Haiying were handcuffed like that for three days and nights. Another practitioner was handcuffed for five days. She is now absent-minded and doesn't remember anything.

• Recent News on the Persecution of Practitioners Held at Hebei Provincial Women's Forced Labour Camp

  Over 400 Falun Gong practitioners are currently detained at the Hebei Provincial Women's Forced Labour Camp. Most were sent to the camp prior to the Olympic Games. Because Ms. Lu Suhua did the Falun Gong exercises, she was handcuffed to a radiator and a window frame by guards led by Liu Ziwei and an inmate named Liu Juan. Her arms were stretched to the maximum between the radiator and the window frame. Guard Liu Ziwei said, "We must not let her get comfortable. We should leave her unable to stand or squat down." When Ms. Lu Suhua shouted, "Falun Gong is good!" the guards stuffed a cloth in her mouth and sealed it with tape. Then Liu Ziwei and Liu Juan kicked her face, causing her vision to blur for the next six days.

• Ms. Cui Xiaoxian, Ms. Cui Shumei, and Ms. Feng Wenzhen from Li County, Hebei Province, Are Imprisoned

  On October 30th, 2008, personnel from the Li County Court in Hebei Province sentenced practitioners Ms. Cui Xiaoxian, Ms. Cui Shumei, and Ms. Feng Wenzhen for the third time. The previous two times these three ladies, who are in their 50s, were also tried in the Li County Court but were not be convicted because their defence lawyer showed how police officer Wang Junchang had manufactured the evidence. The judge was supposed to release these three practitioners immediately, without any charges, but they have remained imprisoned for over a year now.

• Officials from Shanghai Xuhui Court Mistreat Falun Gong Practitioners

  On October 21st, 2008, the Shanghai Xuhui Court held a hearing for practitioners Mr. Liu Peng, Ms. Zheng Yan and Ms. Zhang Xumei. There were over seventy police officers and plain-clothes police officers in the courtroom and security was tight. Some of the people who planned to watch the hearing were threatened. Ms. Zhang Yuxia has been a friend of Mr. Liu Peng and Ms. Zhang Xumei for many years. The authorities found her to be "suspicious" and detained her. Ms. Zhang Yuxia had planned to watch the hearing, however, officials from the court called the officials from the school where she is employed and demanded that they stop her from watching the hearing. They also threatened that she would be arrested and held temporarily if she did come to watch.

• Cui Lixin's Family Requests Her Immediate Release From Forced Labour Camp For Medical Treatment

  Ms. Cui Lixin is a Falun Gong practitioner was was sentenced to forced labour in June 2007. Currently she is diagnosed with an intestinal adhesion and is in danger. Her mother-in-law has written letters to the relevant authorities asking that her daughter-in-law be released for medical treatment. She writes: "Since she (Ms. Cui) was sentenced to forced labour because she practises Falun Gong, it's as though half the sky has collapsed at home. My grandson has lost his mother. No one supervises his schooling or makes sure that he is fed or clothed. Whenever I hear my grandson talking about his mother, I can't help crying."

• Nine Years of Persecution Endured by Practitioner Cheng Xiaobao from Xiangfan City, Hubei Province

  On June 21st, 2001, Mr. Cheng Xiaobao, 50 years old, was arrested for his efforts to expose the persecution of Falun Gong. He went on a hunger strike to protest. A prison doctor opened the practitioner's mouth with an implement and force-fed Mr. Cheng with the help of five criminals. One month later Cheng's whole body was swollen and covered with scabies. In August 2002, Cheng Xiaobao who had already suffered all kinds of miseries was sentenced four years in prison. In prison he was forced to to make bricks. Guards beat him and pulled him into the scorchingly hot brick kiln. At last, Mr. Cheng was abandoned to the road for delivering the bricks, half dead.

• Persecution Still at Heightened Level in Hebei Province Women's Prison after the Olympics

  During the Beijing Olympics, the Hebei Province Women's Prison suspended all visitation and phone calls for practitioners and their families. After the Olympics, each ward created a special group which consisted of three "transformed" practitioners, two prisoners as personal monitors, and another prisoner who monitored the group and informed the guard. The special group targets one practitioner at a time. The targeted practitioner was transferred to a single cell, and not allowed to meet or communicate with any other practitioners. The special group intensively tried to "transform" the practitioner. After a period of time, if the "transformation" fails, the practitioner is either confined to a torture room or taken to the brainwashing camp and subjected to further persecution.

• Policemen in Tangshan City Imprison a Family of Four

  On July 10th, 2008, Ms. Zhang Yueqin, her husband He Yixing, their daughter He Yan and son-in-law Sun Fengli were all arrested by police in Tangshan. The police broke into Ms. Zhang's residence, breaking their windows and doors. They searched her residence, took many valuable personal belongings and more than 600,000 Yuan cash. They were all locked up in the First Detention Centre in Tangshan. A team of people from the Hebei Provincial 610 Office came to the detention centre to brainwash all four of them. In July, Ms. Zhang was the first of the four who was subjected to the torture method "Death Bed". On August 13th, the authorities at the Detention Centre refused to allow the lawyer to see Zhang Yueqin and He Yixing. Their excuse was that they had orders from higher authorities.

• 36-Year-Old Ms. Fan Yanli Dies after Being Detained in Henan Province

  Ms. Fan Yanli, 36, lived in Nanyang City, Henan Province. On April 24th, 2008, she was arrested along with more than a dozen other Falun Gong practitioners in one of their homes. The police ransacked her home, and she was detained in the Nanyang City First Detention Centre for more than six months. Due to the hard labour, malnutrition, lack of sleep, and constant threats, she became very weak and often vomited. On October 9th, Wolong District Court put Ms. Fan Yanli on trial. She died on October 27th, 2008.
