• Mr. Guo Zhiwei Severely Tortured in Jidong Prison

  On August 2nd, 2008, Guo Zhiwei, a Falun Gong practitioner, was abducted from his own electric sawing company by police, who beat him brutally. There were bruises all over his body. He was taken to Jidong Prison. For over a month, Mr. Guo could not ingest food or water, and he is now in an extremely frail condition. While bedridden, he was tortured daily with force-feeding. He has suffered from fevers, stomach aches, diarrhoea, and low blood pressure. This is the fifth time that Mr. Guo has been persecuted by the Shiyou Public Security Bureau and the Renqiu City People's Court.

• The "Little White Building" Brainwashing Centre in Baoding City, Where Falun Gong Practitioners Are Brutally Persecuted

  Baoding Forced Labour Camp adopted brutal methods to try to forcibly "transform" Falun Gong practitioners. These tortures included forcing practitioners to use both hands to hold their heads and feet while staying in a squatting position for a long time, to lie on a wooden board, to be handcuffed to a bed frame for a long time in an awkward position, unable to stand or sit comfortably; and to endure "stewing the eagle" (long-term sleep deprivation). Political instructors often ordered criminal inmates such as robbers and thieves to beat and torture practitioners Wang Defu and Yu Yongqi with electric batons.

• Two Older Ladies from Zhangqiu City, Shandong Province, Abused

  On July 22nd, 2008, four police officers broke into 62-year-old Ms. Zhao Fengying's home. Ms. Wu Suqiong and her daughter were staying with Ms. Zhao. The police then ransacked her home. When one of the officers tried to take away items related to Falun Gong, Ms. Zhao tried her best to stop him. The police mercilessly beat Ms. Zhao, Ms. Wu, and her daughter. They also sprayed some unknown drug on Ms. Zhao's face that made her fall on the ground and lose consciousness. The three ladies were taken to the Jinan City Detention Centre. Ms. Zhao said, "How can you beat her (Ms. Wu) so brutally. Don't you have any humanity left?" The deputy director responded, "As long as you insist on practising Falun Gong, we will beat you to death."

• Nineteen Practitioners Held at a Brainwashing Centre in Laishui County, Hebei Province

  Police officers from the National Security Team, Police Department and the 610 Office in Laishui County, Hebei Province staged mass arrests of Falun Gong practitioners, ransacked their homes, sentenced them to prison and detained them before the Beijing Olympics. After they were held at the Laishui County Detention Centre, some practitioners were taken to the brainwashing centre at the target practice field which is located in Laishui County. The target practice field was supposed to be a training place for the militia, but it has become an important site where Laishui County Chinese Communist Party (CCP) officials torture Falun Gong practitioners.

• Massive Arrests in Guangzhou City, Guangdong Province

  On April 15th, 2008, 610 Officers started arresting Falun Gong practitioners. Practitioner Ms. Li Wei was on a business trip and thus avoided arrest. However, her husband, Yang Haidong, was arrested. Officials from Ms. Li's workplace visited her parents claiming they would guarantee her safety and a normal working environment [if she would return]. After receiving the information, Ms. Li believed that her company officials were sincere, so she returned to work on July 21st. Two 610 Office agents then took her away and admitted her to the Sanshui Brainwashing Centre.

• Police Arrest Ms. Chen Fang, a Practitioner from Xianning City, Hubei Province

  On July 14th, Ms. Chen Fang, a practitioner, was forced into a car as she was walking with her daughter. Her neighbour wrote down the licence plate number. Informants said that it was a car from the Wenquan Police Bureau, in Xianning City. Soon after Ms. Chen was arrested, several policemen went to Ms. Chen Fang's home with an arrest document and forced her mother-in-law to sign it. Enraged at this, her mother-in law refused to sign the arrest document and chastised the police for behaving like gangsters. Ms. Chen Fang was taken to a brainwashing centre. Her husband, Mr. Yu Jinguang, has been sentenced to three years of forced labour.

• The Persecution of Ms. Zhao Fengying from Panzhihua City

  Ms. Zhao Fengying, who was 60 years old, went to Beijing twice to appeal to the government on behalf of Falun Gong. In November 1999, she was detained at the Renhe District Detention Centre. In order to protest her detention, she went on a hunger strike. The guards brutally force-fed her. They then sent her to hospital and tied her limbs to a bed and had police officers stand by the entrance to her cell as they injected her with unknown drugs. In December, she was sentenced to a forced labour camp for one year. It was not until January 2003 that Ms. Zhao was finally able to leave the forced labour camp. Soon after she returned home, she was again repeatedly harassed by Chinese Communist Party (CCP) members.

• Brutally Tortured into Mental Instability, Ms. Tan Xiufen Jumped from a Building to Her Death

  Two months after Ms. Tan Xiufen was released from the Tiandong County Detention Centre, she jumped from the fifth floor of her apartment building and died on March 27th, 2006. In the detention centre she suffered many kinds of torments, and brainwashing. The guards threatened her husband and her son to pressure her to give up her belief in Falun Gong. Unable to endure these tortures, she wrote a "Guarantee Statement" to give up her practice. Her behaviour became psychotic. After she returned home she often seemed to be in a state of abject terror. From investigation we can conclude that Ms. Tan Xiufen became mentally disordered due to the brutal persecution implemented by the police.

• The Chengdu "Law Education Centre" Violates the Law

  The Xinjin Brainwashing Centre has received orders to force practitioners to renounce Falun Gong by any means necessary. The most vicious means is the administration of drugs that damage the central nervous system. First they mix a type of drug with food, which interferes with normal physical functions. After victims take this drug, they experience a variety of physical ailments. Then they would claim to treat the victims' illnesses with drugs that damage the central nervous system, causing excruciating pain and sometimes feelings of paranoia and mental instability. After their release, practitioners who have been persecuted this way often suffer serious after-effects to their brain, heart and stomach. They often experience memory loss, lethargy, panic attacks, heart palpitations, stomach cramps and other symptoms.

• Mr. Dong Liantai Dies as a Result of Persecution in Changlinzi Forced Labour Camp

  Mr. Dong Liantai, 45, was arrested and detained several times. In July 2008 he was taken to Changlinzi Forced Labour Camp. In order to try to force him to give up his faith, the guards tortured him by tying him to a "Tiger Bench" and force-feeding him mustard oil and highly concentrated salt water, which hurt his stomach and throat terribly. He was coughing severely, could not sleep, and he felt a hot, burning sensation in his chest and stomach, all of which caused him to pass out. In less than 12 weeks, Mr. Dong was near death due to the torture. The authorities released him and he on September 19, 2008, with a high fever and in extreme pain.

• 67-Year-Old Ms. Chen Xiurong Died as a Result of Persecution in Qinhuangdao City, Hebei Province

  Ms. Chen Xiurong, in her 60s, began practising Falun Gong in 1996 and benefited both mentally and spiritually. She went to Beijing to appeal against the persecution in 2000, but she was injured as a result of being brutally beaten by a government employee. After that, local police often harassed and ransacked her home. They threatened her, took her Falun Gong books, and took her into custody at the local police station. Her family feared persecution, so they helped the police to restrict her personal freedom. She had symptoms of a stroke in 2004 and died in August 2007 at the age of 67.

• Ms. Wang Liqiu Brainwashed in Jilin Women's Prison

  On February 13th, 2007, Ms. Wang Liqiu was arrested by police. The arresting officers forced eight bottles of a mustard solution into Ms. Wang's nose, causing her to go into shock. After pouring cold water on her to wake her, they continued torturing her until she was on the verge of death. With no evidence of any wrongdoing, Ms. Wang was still sentenced to three years at the Jilin Province Women's Prison on November 23rd, 2007. The guards put her on a torture device called the "stretching bed." While imprisoned, Ms. Wang and her fellow practitioners were brainwashed every day. They are also forced to study materials slandering Falun Gong.

• Large Scale Arrests and Abuses of Falun Gong Practitioners in Qidong County, Hunan Province before the Beijing Olympics

  Before the Beijing Olympics, in Hunan Province, the 610 Office and local police stations in every township in Qidong County ordered police to arrest Falun Gong practitioners on a large scale and detain them. They ransacked practitioners' homes, and confiscated Falun Gong books and informational materials and valuable personal property. The police also beat practitioners. On August 4th, several police officers climbed up from the first floor through the security grill and broke into practitioner Shi Zhenhua's window. Seven officers dragged Ms. Shi into the police car and took her to the police station. Zhou Aimin kicked and beat Ms. Shi. Her legs were severely injured and her chest and back were badly bruised. Then the police took Ms. Shi to the county detention centre.

• 50-Year-Old Ms. Liu Yanqin Tortured Severely in Qingyuan County, Liaoning Province

  During the time leading up to the Olympics, police arrested 50-year-old Ms. Liu Yanqin. She was tortured for two days and a night in a detention centre. The torture was so severe that Ms. Liu was hardly able to take care of herself from this point onward. Ms. Liu was shackled by her hands and legs to a tiger bench. The police officers beat and cursed her, force-feeding her liquor. They blocked her mouth and forced her to breathe it in through her nose. They also put a burning cigarette into her nostril and forced her to inhale the smoke. [Editor's note: Falun Gong practitioners do not drink alcohol or smoke]. Her fingers lost all mobility and she could no longer feed herself. She was vomiting, and her body and face were covered with bruises.

• Persecution of Falun Gong Practitioner Ms. Li Jingyan from Weifang City, Shandong Province

  Ms. Li Jingyan appealed for Falun Gong to the government officials in the winter of 2000, telling them of the benefits of the practice. They were arrested and detained in a local retirement home. Li Jingyan tried to talk to the guards, "We practise Falun Gong and try to be good people. Why do you beat and detain us?" They immediately beat her with police batons. She lost consciousness and was sent to the town hospital for emergency care. On February 26th, 2006, Ms. Li was arrested at home. Police subjected her to a beating, breaking her nose in the process. On July 9th, 2008 Li Jingyan was arrested again and sent to Wangcun Forced Labour Camp.
